Islanders 5, Capitals 3: Isles Overcome Early Deficit To End Six-Game Slide

Head coach Jack Capuano's line shuffling was a success and the New York Islanders snapped a six-game losing streak Saturday night with a 5-3 victory over the Washington Captials at the Nassau Coliseum.

The Capitals went ahead 2-0 after the first period on goals by Joel Ward and Alex Ovechkin, prompting some fans to chant for the appearance of backup goalie Al Montoya. But starter Rick DiPietro allowed just one goal the rest of the way as Capuano's new line of Brian Rolston, Frans Nielsen and P.A. Parenteau pulled New York back into the contest. Nielsen cut the deficit in half early in the second period before Rolston tied it 15 minutes later with his first goal of the season.

New York went ahead early in the third period through Matt Martin, but Brooks Laich responded with a power-play goal off a wrist shot with under 11 minutes to play. Parenteau then broke the tie with 1:46 remaining and John Tavares scored an empty-net goal to seal the deal. It was DiPietro's first win of the season.
