2012 NFL Mock Draft, New York Giants: Peter King Selects Harrison Smith, S, Notre Dame

Stay connected for news and updates

In Sports Illustrated's latest 2012 NFL Mock Draft, Peter King projects the New York Giants to use the No. 32 pick in the NFL Draft on Harrison Smith, a safety from Notre Dame.

A mature four-year starter for the Irish, Smith has the speed to play free safety and the tackling ability to play strong. The Giants could go in a lot of directions here, with McClellin and Mike Adams both possible because of positional need. But a 47-game college starter and eager special-teamer will be too much for G.M. Jerry Reese to pass up.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese noted during a Thursday press conference that his team has a philosophy to draft the best player available, rather than selecting based on positional need. The National Football Post sees Smith as a solid, if not sexy, pick. Despite lacking top-notch athleticism, Smith is able to make plays due to his impressive instincts.
