New York Giants safeties Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips, both former University of Miami football players, are among dozens of current and former Hurricans implicated in a wide-ranging Yahoo! Sports investigation of improprieties within the Miami program.
The Yahoo! Sports investigation centers on what is called "eight-year run of rampant NCAA rule-breaking" as described by a Miami booster, Nevin Shapiro, currently incarcerated for his role in a Ponzi scheme.
Here are the allegations Shapiro has made against Phillips. They mostly seem to involve food, drinks and entertainment provided by Shapiro.
In January, Phillips told Yahoo! he "didn’t know much about" Shapiro.
Shapiro's allegations against Rolle appear to be more significant. They include trips, cash payments totaling thousands of dollars, jewelry, transportation and more. Yahoo! said there were 307 calls between Rolle and Shapiro from 2004 to 2010.
Rolle was reportedly not made available for comment today by the Giants.
Antrel Rolle Tells Mike Francesa Nevin Shapiro Is 'Irrelevant'
WFAN radio host Mike Francesa did his daily show from the Timex Performance Center today, where the New York Giants are holding their 2011 training camp. Francesa talked to a plethora of Giants. Much of what Francesa got his guests to talk about was mundane, but he did get Rolle to talk about Nevin Shapiro and the allegations against him as part of the investigation into wrongdoing in the University of Miami football program.
Yahoo! Sports Tuesday broke the story of a nearly year-long investigation into the Miami football program. Rolle is alleged to have sought and accepted thousands of dollars in gifts and cash, as well as other perks.
