49ers 27, Giants 20: A Quick Look Back

Let’s take a quick look back at Sunday’s 27-20 loss by the New York Giants to the San Francisco 49ers,

It Was Over When …

San Francisco’s Justin Smith batted down Eli Manning’s pass on fourth-and-two from the 49ers 10-yard line with 37 seconds left, securing the victory for San Francisco.

Turning Point Of The Game

A stretch of 2:47 late in the third quarter and at the beginning of the fourth quarter in which the 49ers turned a 13-12 deficit into a 27-13 lead. A poor punt and a blown pass coverage led to the first score, giving San Francisco a 20-13 lead. An Eli Manning interception on what appeared to be a miscommunication with Mario Manningham led to the second score, with 12:26 to play in the game.

The Good

— The Giants snapped Frank Gore’s string of 100+yard games at five. Gore, suffering from knee and ankle injuries, carried just six times for no yards.

— The Giants had the ball for 34:37, compared to 25:23 for the 49ers.

— Eli Manning passed for 311 yards, his fourth 300+ yard passing game this season.

The Bad

— Reserve defensive back Derrick Martin committed three costly special teams penalties, including two on one punt.

— Mario Manningham had a chance to haul in what could have been a game-tying 42-yard touchdown pass, but had the ball slide off his fingertips. Manningham also broke off a pass route that led to Manning’s costly fourth-quarter interception.
