Perry Fewell Misses Out On Cleveland Job -- Shurmur Hired

Perry Fewell is down to one possibility in his hunt for an NFL head-coaching job. As the tweet above indicates, the Cleveland Browns have chosen Pat Shurmur to be their new head coach. Fewell, the Giants defensive coordinator, interviewed there on Tuesday.

SI.com's Peter King said Fewell made a good impression in Cleveland, but "fell a little short."

Fewell has been connected to the openings in San Francisco, Carolina, Cleveland and Denver. Only the Denver job now remains open, and indications have been that Fewell is not at the top of the list of candidates for that job.

Former Carolina Panthers coach John Fox is on the list of those who have interviewed with John Elway and Pat Bowlen for the Denver job. A report from the NFL Network's Jason La Confora indicates that Houston Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison could be the leading candidate for that job. La Canfora points out that Dennison played with Elway, and spent 24 years in the Denver organization.

All of this, of course, is good news for Giants fans. Fewell was a big part of the revitalization in 2010 of a Giants defense that had been atrocious in 2009. Plus, if the Giants were to lose Fewell that would mean the team would be looking for its fourth defensive coordinator in four seasons, hardly a recipe for success.
