Giants sign running backs Ryan Torain and Kregg Lumpkin

With Andre Brown done for the year with a broken fibula, the New York has signed a pair of running backs, Ryan Torain and Kregg Lumpkin, to help back up Ahmad Bradshaw and David Wilson.

The New York Giants will sign former Washington Redskins running back Ryan Torain in addition to Kregg Lumpkin to replace Andre Brown, who is out for the rest of the regular season, according to Jason La Canfora.

La Canfora reported earlier Tuesday that Torain and Lumpkin had been in a group of running backs working out including Rock Cartwright, Ryan Grant, Cadillac Williams, and Derrick Coleman, and that the team would sign Lumpkin. However, he later added that the team would also sign Torain. With only one roster spot being opened up by Brown's trip to the IR with a broken fibula, the team had to cut tackle Selvish Capers. The pair will provide depth for Ahmad Bradshaw and David Wilson.

Torain was drafted in the fifth round out of Arizona State by the Denver Broncos in 2008, starting later that year when the two backs ahead of him were injured. However, he tore his ACL in his first start, ending his rookie year and keeping him off the field in 2009 as well. Between 2010 and 2011, he started 12 games for the Redskins, recording 942 yards in 18 total games. For his career, he averages 4.2 yards per carry and has scored six touchdowns, losing one fumble.
