Deron Williams said Thursday there's a 90 percent chance he remains a New Jersey Net, but believes the Nets need to make roster improvements.
New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams, who stated this week that he plans to opt out of the final year of his contract at the end of this season, told 660 WFAN on Monday there is a 90 percent chance he remains in New Jersey beyond this season, but he believes the Nets need to make roster improvements.
"Financially, it makes sense for me to opt out," he said. "It has nothing to do with the Nets. Like I said, I love the organization, the organization is great. My preference would be to stay here."
Williams acknowledged that he wants the Nets to make significant upgrades if he does stay.
"My plan is to stay. Hopefully we can get some good talent to where I can stay," Williams said.
Asked the chances that he remains in New Jersey, Williams said, "I'd probably say like 90 percent."
Williams said he speaks to Dwight Howard often and called Howard the one player in the NBA he would most like to play with. But he said the two have no plans to team up anywhere, and he does not know what Howard plans to decide regarding his own upcoming free agency.
