The New York Mets remain in the NL Wild Card hunt largely because of a starting rotation that ranks fourth in ERA among National League teams. But their rotation has been decimated because of injury, and the Mets could soon be looking for a fifth starter. If it becomes a dire need, the Mets might even consider rushing one of their two best minor league pitching prospects.

Miguel Batista, who appeared in relief Friday night, is expected to get the first crack at the opening. But if he falters, the Mets could be forced to turn to young prospects who they don't feel are particularly ready.

According to the New York Post, Matt Harvey could be next in line after Batista. The Mets are hesitant to promote Harvey, the seventh overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, because they feel the right-hander still needs work. But the 23-year-old has been impressive at Triple-A Buffalo, where he is 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 18 starts.

An intriguing option outside of Harvey is Zack Wheeler, who hasn't yet pitched a single Triple-A game. The Post notes that Wheeler, the Mets' top prospect, has a season cap of approximately 150 innings and has already pitched 92 2/3. But the 22-year-old righty has dominated his first stint in Double-A this season, compiling an 8-4 record with a 2.62 ERA in 15 starts.

Former New York Yankees utility man and current San Francisco Giants hitting coach Hensley Meulens was presented with The Royal Decoration of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on Friday night prior to San Francisco's game with the Houston Astros.

The honor makes Meulens the Dutch version of a Knight. He wasn't quite a Knight during his time in a Yankees uniform, hitting .221 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI over parts of five seasons. He finished his career with brief stints in Montreal and Arizona, bringing his Major League totals to .220 batting with 15 home runs and 53 RBI.

The Giants have taken to calling Meuelens, a third-year hitting coach, "Sir Bam Bam" since his honor was initially revealed in April. The native of Curacao participated with the Netherlands in the 2000 Olympics and coached the country's Olympic team in 2004.

The New York Mets continue a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves on Saturday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. ET at Turner Field. (TV Schedule: Fox)

The Mets resumed play after the All-Star break on Friday night to poor reviews. Starting pitcher Chris Young surrendered five runs in just three innings as New York fell to Atlanta, 7-5, to drop 1.5 games behind the Braves in the NL Wild Card race.

R.A. Dickey will look to build on his fantastic first half for the Mets, with a chance to earn his 11th straight win. The Braves will counter with Tommy Hanson.

The New York Yankees look for their sixth consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon when they host the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium. (Game Time: 1:05 p.m., TV Schedule: YES)

New York stole a 6-5 victory Friday night by scoring four runs in the eighth inning. Mark Teixeira tied the game at 5-5 with a three-run homer and Russell Martin sent an RBI single to right field later in the same frame for the winning margin.

Friday night's contest was the Yankees' first since the All-Star break. Freddy Garcia will start for New York. The Angels are expected to counter with Jerome Williams, who has not made a start since June 18 due to an asthma attack.

The Brooklyn Nets are "close" to a deal to re-sign power forward Kris Humphries, general manager Billy King told reporters Friday at the team's pep rally at Brooklyn's Borough Hall.

King cautioned that "it's a process," according to Howard Beck of the New York Times. But it looks like the Nets are close to keeping their leading rebounder and continuing to solidify their rotation as they position themselves for a strong playoff run next year.

It has been reported that the Nets are willing to offer Humphries three years and $24 million to remain with the team. His other primary suitor, the Charlotte Bobcats, are said to be offering three years and $22 million.

Humphries averaged 13.8 points and 11.0 rebounds last season. His rebounding average ranked him fifth in the NBA.

The New York Mets have announced that they will call up relief pitcher Josh Edgin on Friday to replace Dillon Gee on their active roster.

Edgin, a 25-year old lefty, has yet to make his major league debut after being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 50th round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft. He is 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 37 innings over 35 appearances in Triple-A Buffalo this season.

Gee will undergo surgery Friday in St. Louis to replace a portion of damaged artery, and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. He was released from the hospital on Wednesday after being admitted for a blood clot in his right (pitching) shoulder. The surgery is designed to keep Gee from getting another similar blood clot in the future.

Pierre Rolland of France won Stage 11 of the Tour de France on Thursday, but Bradley Wiggins of Britain increased his overall lead and is threatening to run away with the title.

Riding the 92-mile trek from Albertville to La Toussuire, considered the most challenging stage on this year's Tour, Rolland blasted his competition. He finished 55 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Thibaut Pinot.

Wiggins crossed the finish line 57 seconds behind Rolland, but still managed to boost his overall lead and strengthen his choke hold on the race. Cadel Evans, last year's Tour champion, dropped from second place to fourth and now stands 3:19 behind Wiggins. Christopher Froome took over second place, but is 2:05 behind Wiggins.

The Brooklyn Nets officially introduced Reggie Evans and Mirza Teletovic on Thursday, and owner Mikhail Prokhorov expressed his excitement with the way the offseason has unfolded.

"I'm thrilled with the way our team has come together," Prokhorov said in a statement. "My congratulations and appreciation go out to General Manager Billy King, Assistant General Manager Bobby Marks and Head Coach Avery Johnson for their tenacity, nerve and heart throughout this process. With the re-signing of Deron Williams and the trade for Joe Johnson, we go into our new home led by an All-Star backcourt and with every hope of a great season for the Brooklyn Nets.
The Nets' offseason has been a busy one. The team traded for Johnson, re-signed Williams and Gerald Wallace, and extended the contract of Brook Lopez. Though they did not manage to acquire Dwight Howard, the Nets should compete for one of the top three or four seeds in the Eastern Conference in the upcoming season.

San Francisco 49ers running back Brandon Jacobs appeared on Jim Rome's show, ROME, Wednesday, telling the host that he left the New York Giants simply for monetary reasons.

Via NBC's Pro Football Talk:

Appearing on Jim Rome's humbly titled show ROME on CBS Sports Network, Jacobs said "It was just money, that's all it was, a couple hundred thousand."

Jacobs told Rome he didn't want to leave the Giants, calling it "the nature of the business."

When Rome asked: "For a couple hundred thousand bucks, wouldn't you want to stay there? Wouldn't they want you there?," Jacobs replied: "You would think so."

"I'm in a great place [now]," Jacobs said. "I'm not happy about it, but I've been there for seven years, won two Super Bowls.

"I wish I could have stayed, but I'm not complaining about where I am now, not at all."
