It will be a tough couple days for both of New York City's NBA teams, who will face challenging opponents in the week ahead. Between Monday and Thursday the Knicks will host the Trailblazers and Spurs, while Brooklyn will visit San Antonio and Oklahoma City.

It will be a tough week ahead for both New York-area basketball teams, as the NBA schedule does no favors to either the Knicks or Nets. Both face a pair of challenging games between now and next weekend.

The New York Knicks will have the good fortune of staying home for the next several contests, when they host the Portland Trailblazers on Tuesday and the San Antonio Spurs in a Thursday night, nationally televised game. Portland comes to Madison Square Garden at 15-14 overall, while San Antonio is currently third in the NBA's Western Conference standings with a 23-8 overall mark. The Knicks remain tied for the best record in the East at 21-9.

Meanwhile, New York's other team will hit the road for a challenging pair of games in their own right.

The Brooklyn Nets will start a three-game road trip on Monday night when they face the Spurs in San Antonio, and follow that up with a Wednesday visit to Oklahoma City. As things stand, the Thunder have the second-best record in the entire NBA, at 23-6 overall.

Currently the Nets sit at 16-14, holding the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

Even with a victory Sunday, the New York Giants were officially eliminated from the 2012 NFC playoff picture when the Bears beat the Lions. New York needed a lot of help in Week 17 to make the postseason.

Even with a 42-7 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday, it wasn't enough for the New York Giants to make this year's NFL playoffs. New York was officially eliminated when the Chicago Bears notched a 26-24 victory over the Detroit Lions to close out their regular season.

Entering Week 17 the Giants were a long-shot to make the playoffs, and and needed to not only beat Philadelphia, but also for Chicago, Dallas and Minnesota to all lose. Unfortunately for Giants' fans, the Bears victory over Detroit eliminated them from any hope of a postseason trip. Both Minnesota and Dallas play later Sunday.

For Giants' players and fans alike, Sunday's victory over the Eagles was a bittersweet ending to disappointing season for the defending Super Bowl champions.

New York started the season by losing on opening night to Dallas, and after a strong middle portion of the year, fell apart down the stretch. The Giants lost three of their previous four games entering Sunday's season finale.

The Giants finished the season with a 9-7 overall record.

After early struggles, the Cincinnati Bearcats held on to beat Syracuse 35-24 in the Queen City. Running back George Winn finished the game with three rushing touchdowns and another one through the air for the Bearcats.

After a slow start, the Cincinnati Bearcats rebounded to beat the Syracuse Orange, 35-24, to win a crucial Big East game Saturday at home.

Early on, it looked like an upset might be brewing, as the Orange took a 17-14 lead into halftime and a 24-21 lead early in the third quarter. But in the end, Cincinnati had enough firepower and enough George Winn to seal the victory.

The running back was undoubtedly the star of the day for the Bearcats, and on the afternoon finished with 169 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He also added a touchdown through the air for the Bearcats, which improved to 6-2 on the season after suffering back-to-back losses in the last two weeks.

For Syracuse, it was a disappointing afternoon for the Orange, who fell to 4-5 on the year after winning two straight. Like Cincinnati, the star of the game for Syracuse was running back Jerome Smith, who finished the afternoon with 116 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Ryan Nassib added 286 yards through the air in a losing effort.

Syracuse now must win two of its final three games to be bowl eligible.

Box Score Hero: Could it be anyone other than George Winn? The senior back rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns, and also added another passing touchdown through the air.

Rankings Ramifications: At 6-2, there is a chance that Cincinnati could be ranked when the new polls are released later this weekend.

But Did They Cover? Yes. Cincinnati entered as a five-point favorite, meaning the team was able to cover the spread.

Despite Hurricane Sandy hitting New York City on Monday, New York City Marathon officials expect the race to go on as planned Sunday. The race has been run annually since 1970 and had over 40,000 participants in 2011.

Since 1970, the New York City Marathon has become one of the most popular events in New York City, and one of the signature long distance racing events in the world. Despite Hurricane Sandy hitting the city on Monday, the race is expected to go on as planned this coming Sunday.

The marathon began under humble beginnings in 1970, when Fred Lebrow of the New York Road Runners (NYRR) organized the event, which saw just 55 of the 127 starters finish the 26.2 mile course. In those early years, the race was run on a loop around Central Park, until six years in, when Lebrow rerouted the course to be run through all five of New York City's boroughs. That route -- through all of New York City -- remains today.

And since its humble beginnings, the race has grown, with 40,000 starters entering the event in 2011. Included in that field was Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai, who set a marathon record with his 2:05:06 time. Ethiopian Firehiwot Dado won the women's event in 2011 with a time of 2:23:15.

The marathon also added a wheelchair division in 2000.

After previously saying that he'd like to have contract negotiations done by the middle to the end of the season, Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz told reporters on Monday that progress has been made on a new long-term deal. Cruz is the Giants' leading receiver this year.

After stating previously that he'd like to get his new contract done by the middle to the end of this season, on Monday Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz said that progress has been made over the previous few days.

Here is what Cruz had to say, via ESPN New York's Josina Anderson:

"I was excited to hear this weekend that contract talks are moving in the right direction," Cruz told Anderson. "I heard there was some progress on the structure."

That is news to the ears of both Giants fans and Cruz, a New Jersey native who has expressed an interest in staying with the organization long term.

As things stand, Cruz is arguably one of the NFL's most underpaid players, earning just $540,000 during the 2012 campaign. This despite the fact that Cruz currently leads the Giants with 52 catches for 650 yards and seven touchdowns. Cruz also set a Giants' franchise record with 1,536 yards receiving in 2011 in helping lead the Giants to a Super Bowl victory.

He signed with the organization as an undrafted free agent out of UMass in 2010.

On Monday, Rutgers senior linebacker Khaseem Greene was named one of the semifinalists for this year's Chuck Bednarik award. The award will be handed out to college football's top defensive player on Dec. 6.

Despite receiving their first loss of the season on Saturday to Kent State, that hasn’t stopped Rutgers star linebacker Khaseem Greene from receiving individual acclaim. On Monday, the senior was named one of 16 semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award.

The announcement was made via the Maxwell Football Club on Monday afternoon, which hands out the award annually to college football's top defensive player.

And for Greene, this has been a season to remember despite the Scarlet Knights’ stunning 35-23 loss to Kent State. On the season, Greene leads the team in tackles (67), sacks (3.5) and forced fumbles (four), and is second on the Scarlet Knights with 5.5 tackles for loss and six quarterback hurries, as well.

But for those who have followed Greene’s career, this announcement shouldn’t be all that surprising. The senior from Elizabeth, N.J. was last year's co-Big East Defensive Player of the Year.

The Bednarik Award will be presented at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 6.
