Wright breaks Mets' all-time hits record

David Wright became the New York Mets all-time hits leader Wednesday night. In his second at-bat of the game, Wright dribbled an infield single toward the third-base side that wasn't played properly by Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez in the third inning. The official scorer ruled the play as a hit.

The knock was Wright's 1,419th of his career and helped surpass Ed Kranepool on the franchise's all-time list. Wright completed the feat in 1,256 games from 2004-12. Kranepool played in 1,853 games from 1962-79.

For trivia purposes, Wright collected the historic hit off of Pirates' pitcher Jeff Locke and it scored David Murphy to help the Mets earn a 2-0 advantage. The inning ended with New York leading 4-0.

According to the Mets' official Twitter feed, Wright's first Major League hit came on July 22, 2004, a double off Montreal Expos pitcher Zach Day at Shea Stadium.

Wright now is the Mets' all-time leader in hits, RBI, doubles, total bases and runs scored.
