2012 U.S. Open Scores: Serena Williams And Roger Federer Move On

In the third round of the 2012 U.S. Open on Saturday, a few upsets materialized while most of the stars continued to roll.

Federer was on the top of his game against No. 25 Fernando Verdasco, defeating the challenger in straight sets. Federer was in complete control the entire match, winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to move on to the fourth round.

Scotland's third-ranked Andy Murray also moved on but in a much more gut-wrenching fashion versus No. 30 Feliciano Lopez. In a match that easily could've gone either way, the Olympic gold-medalist finally took care of business against Lopez in four sets that featured three tiebreaks, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), 4-6 and 7-6 (7-4).

On the women's side, Williams never had a doubt in her pounding of Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 6-0 in a contest that barely lasted an hour. Williams was the overwhelming favorite of many experts and has backed up that confidence early on.

In what was a surprising upset, Andrea Hlavackova moved past No. 14 Russian Maria Kirilenko in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
