Conference Realignment: Stony Brook, Albany Football Programs To Move To CAA -- Report

Stay connected for news and updates

The changing football landscape just doesn't happen at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, it's happening at the Football Championship level, as well. According to a report by the Daily News' Steven Marcus, the Stony Brook Seawolves and Albany Great Danes football programs are switching conferences after the 2012-13 season.

Both programs will realign themselves with the Colonial Athletic Association, which already features: Delaware, Villanova, New Hampshire, William & Mary, Richmond, James Madison, Maine and Towson. Stony Brook and Albany would be the league's ninth and 10th members, respectively.

According to a source, who spoke with Marcus, the Stony Brook and Albany have already been confirmed into the CAA.

A news conference announcing the moves is expected next week, the sources said.

When asked about Stony Brook's intention to join the CAA, a university spokesman said in a statement: "As we have consistently stated in the past, we continue to consider Stony Brook's position in the changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics while always operating with the best interests of our student-athletes and institution in mind. As with past precedent, we will not comment further on specific conference realignment . . . or any of the media speculation surrounding it."

Currently, Stony Brook plays football in the Big South Conference, while all its other sports play in the America East Conference. Albany is a part of the Northeast Conference in football and the America East in all other sports.
