The Mets used an early offensive onslaught to carry themselves to the win, scoring four runs in the second inning. Catcher Josh Thole was walked with the bases loaded to give New York its first run of the game, which was immediately followed up by another bases loaded walk that sent home second baseman Daniel Murphy. Left fielder Jordany Valdespin hit a two-run double to make it 4-0.
The Padres responded in the bottom of the third inning, knocking in a run off a single by second baseman Alexi Amarista. But the Mets continued to build on their lead, getting another RBI from Thole on a groundout in the seventh and an additional run courtesy of first baseman Ike Davis's RBI single in the eighth.
San Diego scored in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a home run by third baseman Chase Headley, but New York ended the game on a double play.
The Mets improved to 53-55 with the win, while San Diego fell to 45-64.
