The first day of action at the 2012 U.S. Open is officially underway from beautiful Arthur Ashe Stadium. Many of the world's top players were in action this afternoon, including No. 3 ranked Andy Murray and Maria Sharapova. Let's check out the top matches from a busy day of tennis so far.
Murray defeated Alex Bogomolov, Jr. in three sets, winning 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. Many have pegged Murray as the favorite to win this event and he certainly got off to a strong start. No. 17 Kei Nishikori won his match over Guido Andreozzi, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.
The biggest upset of the day on the men's side came as No. 22 Florian Mayer retired against unranked Jack Sock in the third set. Mayer had previously lost the first two sets and was trailing 3-2 in the third.
On the women's side of things, Sharapova made quick work of Melinda Czink in her first set, winning both sets, 6-2. Ninth-ranked Na Li won her match in two sets, as did No. 11 Marion Bartoli. Defending champion and No. 7 seed Sam Stosur also moved on to Round 2.
