The New York Jets have acted on their displeasure with punter T.J. Conley, waiving the fourth-year player from Idaho just five days before their season starts. Newsday's Kimberley Martin reports they've signed Robert Malone, who was recently waived by San Diego.
Conley seemed to have won the job after the Jets cut two other punters, Travis Baltz and Spencer Lanning, but Conley performed poorly in the team's second exhibition game with 19- and 23-yard punts. His preseason net average was 37.9 yards, 30th in the league. Special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff said the specialist was "probably competing against somebody that's wearing a different color shirt," indicating that even if he won the Jets' job out of training camp, they were looking for other options from around the league as cutdowns happened. Conley had been with the Jets in training camp in 2009 and 2010 before finally making the team in 2011, when he averaged 38.8 yards per boot.
Malone is a third-year player now with his fifth team. He was the Buccaneers' primary punter in 2010 and played one game as a quick fix for the Detroit Lions last season. His career net average is 35.5 yards per punt.

The Jets' defense may be without its starting nose tackle when it begins the season this weekend. Sione Pouha has been battling a lower back injury and Rex Ryan said Monday that he was "not real sure" whether the defensive lineman would be active for the upcoming regular season opener.
The Jets kick off the new season on Sunday at MetLife Stadium against the Buffalo Bills. The game is scheduled to begins at 1 p.m. ET.
If Pouha can't go against the Bills, Kenrick Ellis is likely to be the replacement as he has been in preseason action.
Pouha has been a force front and center for the Jets defense at the nose tackle position since being selected by the franchise in the third round of the 2005 draft. In 2011, Pouha made 58 tackles and one sack as well as forcing one fumble and recovering two others.

The New York Jets have reached their 53-man roster, cutting seven players right before the 9 p.m. ET deadline Friday night, and there were no surprises à la Chris Cooley down in Washington, D.C. You can find the list of complete moves at Jets blog Gang Green Nation, but one thing of note is the fact that they let go all of their late-round picks, including running back Terrence Ganaway, scorer of the Jets' lone preseason touchdown, who is reportedly off to join the Rams.
With Ganaway, tackle Robert T. Griffin and wide receiver Jordan White, none of the Jets' draft picks after the fifth round are on the 53. In addition, the Jets released quarterback Matt Simms, who played well but couldn't beat out Greg McElroy for the third QB job. Here's what GGN's David Wyatt had to say about the decisions.
I was actually a little disappointed to see Donnie Fletcher get cut, I thought he had a better pre-season than [cornerback Isaiah] Trufant. Jordan White was a little inconsistent through camp but then again at least he played unlike Chaz [Schilens]. [Linebacker Marcus] Dowtin has some talent and I still find it such a shame that Ricky Sapp can't seem to stay healthy.

The New York Jets released RB Terrance Ganaway and QB Matt Simms on Friday evening as they move towards a 53-man roster. After announcing 14 cuts this afternoon, the Jets are now down to 59 players.
Ganaway, a rookie out of Baylor, holds one important distinction for the Jets:
The Jets waived the only player that scored a TD for them in the preseason: Terrance Ganaway.

Simms, the son of former Giants quarterback Phil Simms, was signed as an undrafted free agent back in May. He didn't play much during his senior year at Tennessee, throwing just 62 passes in a backup role.
The deadline for NFL rosters to be trimmed to 53 is Friday at 9 p.m. ET.

Offensive tackle Jason Smith has fallen short of the expectations he entered the league with when he was taken out of Baylor as the second overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams. His shortcomings mostly stem from injury, as he's been slowed by concussions both as a rookie and last season.
But Jets' general manager Mike Tannenbaum -- who traded Wayne Hunter to St. Louis for Smith -- is hoping a change of scenery will be just what the 26-year-old needs. With the team trying to fill the loss of Jeff Otah, who failed his physical, nullifying a trade with the Carolina Panthers, Tannenbaum calls the acquisition of Smith a "win-win" according to NorthJersey.com:
"When St. Louis approached us," Tannenbaum said, "we felt like hey, maybe this is a win-win [with] two guys getting fresh starts."
"We understand the risk there," Tannenbaum said of Smith's health issues. "Obviously that was a concern, but we felt like it was a reasonable risk to take."

The Jets made six moves Monday and now have 74 players on their roster. Below is a complete list of the Jets initial cuts.

Damario Ambrose (LB / 6'5 / 270 / Arkansas / Mobile, AL)
Stanley Arukwe (WR / 6'0 / 180 / Troy / Tracy, CA)

Josh Baker (FB/TE / 6'3 / 224 / Northwest Missouri State / Chesapeake, VA)

Brown's release means Nick Folk has once again won the Jets' kicking job. Folk made 19-of-25 attempts last season, his second with the Jets.
The next cut date is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 31. The Jets and the rest of the NFL will have to set their final 53-man rosters then.

Nick Folk has apparently won the New York Jets kicking competition. On Monday morning, the team eleased kicker Josh Brown, according to Dov Kleiman.
With this move, the Jets have inched closer to trimming their roster down to 75 players by the 4 p.m. ET deadline.
Brown is an accomplished NFL veteran who has previously kicked for the Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams. The 33-year-old did send out the following tweet after finding out that he had been let go:
"Best of luck to the 2012 Jets... Thanks for one of the most memorable camps in 10 yrs."
Give Brown credit, at least he's not a bitter soul.
With Brown's release, that makes three high-profile kickers hitting the market in the last two days with Neil Rackers and Billy Cundiff also becoming available.
