The New York Yankees were swept by the Chicago White Sox after dropping the third and final game of their series on Wednesday at U.S. Cellular Field, 2-1.
New York got a great pitching effort from Phil Hughes, who went seven innings and allowed just two runs while scattering five hits and two walks. His lone blemishes were a Kevin Youkilis sac-fly in the third and a solo home run by the rejuvenated Alex Rios in the sixth.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, Chris Sale was just a little bit better. The dominant southpaw threw 7.2 frames of one-run ball. Sale was virtually unhittable for much of the evening, striking out 13 and walking just one.
New York could only muster four hits, two by Robinson Cano. The lone RBI belonged to the captain, Derek Jeter, who hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to briefly knot the score. It was Jeter's 13th homer of the year, the most he's had since 2009.
With the loss, the Yanks watched their AL East lead shrink to three games over the Tampa Bay Rays.

The New York Yankees have activated catcher Austin Romine from the 60-day disabled list, optioning him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The 23-year-old Romine, who appeared in nine games for the Yankees in 2011, had been rehabbing through the franchise's minor league system, meaning the transaction to option him back to Triple-A is more of a technicality. Romine missed the first half of the season with a back injury, and his 30-day rehab window had expired.
The Yankees' 40-man roster is full, but you can expect to see Romine tapped as part of the team's September call-ups.

Former New York Yankees and current Oakland Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon was suspended for 50 games on Wednesday afternoon after testing positive for testosterone.
Colon, 39, had struggled with injuries since the 2005 season and even missed the entire 2010 season due to injury. The Yankees signed him in 2011, and he went 8-10 with an ERA of 4.00. This season Colon has been even better, going 10-9 with an ERA of 3.43 for Oakland.
Before the positive test for testosterone, there was scrutiny over the stem cell procedure Colon had out of the country in 2011 which helped him in his comeback. Colon is the fifth major league player to be suspended for a positive test this season.
Colon said in a statement:
"I apologize to the fans, to my teammates and to the Oakland A's," he said in a statement released by the players' association. "I accept responsibility for my actions and I will serve my suspension as required by the Joint Drug Program."

The New York Yankees will send pitcher Ivan Nova for tests after he reported shoulder stiffness. The news came Wednesday, a day after the right-handed starter was roughed up in a 7-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox and was possible on the verge of being kicked out of the team's five-man pitching rotation.
According to a few reports, Nova (11-7) felt a grab in the sixth inning of his third loss in four starts and was sent back to New York for tests. The Yankees are expecting ace CC Sabathia to return to the rotation Friday and his replacement, David Phelps, probably will stay in the rotation to fill the void.
For most of the season Nova had been outstanding, as he raced out to a 10-3 record with a 3.93 ERA. However, Nova has really struggled lately, as his ERA has ballooned to 4.92.

The New York Yankees will be trying to avoid being swept in the third and final game of their series against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night at U.S. Cellular Field.
Ivan Nova was smacked around the ballpark on Tuesday after being staked to a 2-0 lead, giving up a home run to Paul Konerko and a grand slam to Kevin Youkilis.
Now it will be Phil Hughes' turn to try and turn the momentum around for the Bronx Bombers. The right-hander has been inconsistent this year with a 12-10 record and 4.23 ERA. However, he was terrific in his last start, throwing seven shutout innings to defeat the Boston Red Sox.

Hughes will be opposed by Chicago's ace, Chris Sale. The 23-year-old has been nothing short of sensational for the Sox, compiling 14 wins and a 2.72 ERA. After coming out of the bullpen last season, Sale has turned into one of the better starters in the American League.
This will be Sale's first start against the Yankees, while Hughes pitched against Chicago back on July 1 when he surrendered only two runs in eight innings to earn a victory.

Despite a leadoff home run from shortstop Derek Jeter — which moved him into sole possession of 11th place all-time in career hits — the New York Yankees were unable to hold an early two-run lead on Tuesday, dropping a second straight game to the Chicago White Sox, 7-3.
After Jeter's home run gave the Yankees a quick 1-0 lead, New York manufactured a second run in the opening inning, resulting in a Curtis Granderson fielders choice to score Nick Swisher.
After Paul Konerko tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo home run, it was Kevin Youkilis's grand slam to score Alexei Ramirez, Gordon Beckham and Dewayne Wise that broke the game open and provided the White Sox with a lead they would not relinquish.
The Yankees would tack on one run in the seventh inning courtesy of a Russell Martin solo homer run, however, it was too little to make up the deficit created by the grand slam.
The Yankees and White Sox return to U.S. Cellular Field Wednesday at 8 p.m. for the final game of the three-game set.

With a leadoff homer in the first inning of the New York Yankees' game Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has moved into sole possession of 11th place on the MLB all-time hit list, passing Baltimore Orioles great Eddie Murray.
Jeter leads the majors in hits this season, now with 168, and tied Murray Tuesday night by collecting four hits in five at-bats against the White Sox. Jeter's 3,256 hits make him the active leader in hits. The homer also places Jeter exactly 1,000 hits behind the all-time hits leader, former Cincinnati Reds great Pete Rose, who collected 4,256 in his career.
Jeter also stands less than 400 hits from joining the top four on the all-time hits list.
Be sure to check out SB Nation New York Ed Valentine's look earlier today on whether Jeter has a chance to catch Rose and the factors that go into it.

New York Yankees' pitcher Iova Nova has struggled to find consistency lately, and after dropping Game 1 of a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox Monday night, the Yankees hope their youngster can find his rhythm Tuesday, when they face off in the second of a three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field (8:10 p.m. ET on MY9).
Nova (11-6) and the Yankees are each looking for a bonce-back performance as the lefty allowed four earned runs in just 5 2/3 innings in his last start, while New York was roughed up in a 9-6 loss on Monday.
Meanwhile, Nova's opponent on the mound, Francisco Liriano (1-0), is coming off a strong outing against the Toronto Blue Jays. The performance was good enough to help the lefty earn his first win in a White Sox uniform.
