The American team won the gold medal in the women's eight rowing event on Thursday at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Heavily favored to win the event from the start, Team USA's boat cruised easily to a win over its competitors led by coxswain Mary Whipple.
A 2,000m race, the American women had a lead of half a boat's length by the halfway point. Canada finished second to win the silver, and the Netherlands took the bronze medal. This was the second straight gold medal for Team USA. They have not lost a race in eight years.
On the men's side, the American team in the men's lightweight four did not finish the event with a medal. The South African team took the gold, Great Britain the silver and Denmark the bronze.
