Mets Vs. Reds Final Score: Matt Harvey Strikes Out 8 In 8-4 Win

Matt Harvey (2-3) gave up just one run and struck out eight in 7 2/3 innings in the New York Mets' 8-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night. The win allowed the Mets to avoid a three-game series sweep at Great American Ball Park. Harvey gave up just four hits and one walk to earn the win.

Harvey also turned in a solid night at the plate, hitting a two-RBI double in the fourth inning that gave the Mets a 3-0 lead. Ike Davis hit his 21st home run of the season to lead off the inning and put New York on the board. He finished 2-for-4 after driving in David Wright in the ninth inning with a double.

The Mets added three runs in the sixth inning. Jason Bay hit his sixth home run of the year to push New York's lead to 4-0. Three batters later, Ruben Tejada drove in Kelly Shoppach with a double to left field. He ran in a run on the next at-bat off a Mike Baxter single.

Reds starter Homer Bailey (10-8) left after Baxter's RBI with two outs in the inning. Bailey gave up six runs, four earned, off eight hits and three walks while striking out six to earn the loss.

The Mets capped their scoring on a fielding error by Reds shortstop Zack Cozart in the ninth inning. Justin Turner was called safe at first while Davis ran home from third on the play.

The Reds didn't get on the board until the seventh inning. Jay Bruce hit an RBI double to deep right for Harvey's lone blemish on the night. Cincinnati added another run on a Ryan Ludwick home run off Frank Francisco in the ninth.

Francisco was pulled in a second straight appearance after giving up an RBI single to Miguel Cairo and an RBI double to Cozart on consecutive at-bats. Jon Rauch struck out Wilson Valdez to end the inning and earn his third save of the season.

Mets At Reds Preview: Game Time, TV Schedule, Probable Pitchers

The New York Mets are trying anything to avoid a sweep against the Cincinnati Reds. After losing 3-0 on Tuesday and 6-1 on Wednesday, the Mets hope to salvage one game of the three-game series on Thursday. If the Mets are going to do that, they are going to do it with Matt Harvey (1-3, 3.63 ERA) starting.

In Harvey's last start against the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 10, the 2010 first-round draft pick went six innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Harvey allowed a home run and issued five walks in that game. If Harvey is going to win his first start since his start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 26, he is going to have to keep control of his pitches and limit mistakes against the powerful Reds offense.

The Reds will counter with pitcher Homer Bailey (10-7, 4.08). In his last start against the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 10, Bailey went five and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on nine hits. He also struck out five to keep the Cubs' offense at bay.

The game is set for a 7:10 p.m. first pitch from the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. Television coverage will be provided by SNY as well as MLB Network. Radio coverage will be provided by WFAN 660 AM.

Mets-Reds Final Score: Losing Ways Continue As R.A. Dickey Struggles in 6-1 Loss

For much of this season, R.A. Dickey has been the guy the New York Mets can count on to deliver. To be a dominating force on the mound with a pitch that belies that description. In the first half, it was to build on the storyline of the Mets being one of the more shocking team's. In the second half, it's been about stopping the bleeding.

Wednesday night against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park, Dickey could not be the Mets' savior in a 6-1 loss. He finished with nine strikeouts, but his knuckleball location was not spot-on -- too many were left in the middle of the strikzone, resulting in three home runs and five earned runs.

The knuckleball sensation has not been nearly as unhittable in the season's second half, but that's not to say he's been disappointing either. Couple that with the Mets' complete lack of offense and Dickey has to be flawless to pick up a win.

New York had a 46-41 record after the All-Star break. It's now 55-62. They've won three of their last 11 games. Wednesday's began with an RBI single up the middle by Brandon Phillips, but Dickey was able to hold it together -- even after the umpires asked him to remove the bracelets his daughters had made for him (and lasted 23 starts until now) in the second inning. The knuckleballer was clearly frazzled; he walked the first batter of the inning, but then refocused and struck out the side.

The Mets responded in the fourth with a run on a double-play groundout from Daniel Murphy. But then, Scott Rolen and Todd Frazier launched longballs in the fourth inning and the game quickly became out of reach ... as the Mets finished with only four hits: Mike Baxter and Ruben Tejada had two apiece.

Reds starter Mike Leake added to the lead, making it 5-1 with a single in the sixth, and Ryan Ludwick topped out the scoring with another single in the seventh.

While Dickey wasn't his best, you're just not going to win many games by getting four men on base.

Mets At Reds Preview: Game Time, TV Schedule, Probable Pitchers

After a tough loss in the opener against the Cincinnati Reds, the New York Mets will look to bounce back on Wednesday night at Great American Ballpark.

Not much has gone right since the All-Star break for the Amazins', who have dropped faster in the standings than a stone in water. However, one of the few remaining bright spots will be on the mound Wednesday.

R.A. Dickey gets the ball looking for his 16th win of the year. Dickey has been sensational, toting around a 2.72 ERA thanks to a dancing knuckleball that nobody seems able to hit. In his last start against the Miami Marlins, Dickey pitched a complete game while allowing just one run and striking out 10.

The Reds have Mike Leake on the bump, he of the 4.51 ERA and 4-7 record. Once considered a top prospect, Leake has struggled to find his groove in the big leagues. In his last outing, Leake surrendered three runs in six innings to the Chicago Cubs, earning himself a no-decision.

Mets Burned By Bruce's Walk-Off In Loss To Reds

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - The Cincinnati Reds kept stranding base runners, but Mat Latos and company kept firing scoreless innings.

That was until Jay Bruce helped the Reds finally break through.

Bruce smacked a game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and Cincinnati topped the New York Mets, 3-0, in the opener of a three-game set.

The Reds, who stranded 14 runners and were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position through the first eight frames, got their first two runners on in the ninth when Brandon Phillips walked and Ryan Ludwick singled off Manny Acosta (1-3).

Lefty Josh Edgin came on to face Bruce, who hammered his fourth career walk- off blast into the front row of seats in left field to give the NL Central leaders their fourth straight win.

"They put them out there, we put them out there, and we finally came through in the ninth," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "It was some ballgame."

Cincinnati was unable to capitalize in the third when it had runners on the corners with one out and left the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings. The only time the Reds were set down in order was when Bobby Parnell fired a 1-2-3 eighth.

Latos scattered five hits and walked two over seven scoreless frames. He is 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA over his last 10 starts.

The Mets had runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth. Ruben Tejada lined a ball off Jose Arredondo (5-2) to center field, but the ball hung up just enough for Drew Stubbs to make a running backhanded shoestring catch.

New York also left the bases full in the fourth when Phillips made a leaping catch at second off the bat of Mets starter Chris Young to take a run away.

Young wobbled through 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing eight hits and four walks while fanning four for New York, which has dropped six of its last eight games.

The Mets finished 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.

"We had opportunities. We have to find a way to score with runners on base and less than two outs," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Game Notes

Bruce's homer was his 23rd of the year. It was his second blast off a left- handed reliever in the last two contests ... Cincinnati moved to 307-260 all- time against the Mets ... The Reds moved to 20-8 during Joey Votto's absence.
