Dana Vollmer Helps U.S. Win Gold, Set Olympic Record In Women's 4x200-Meter Freestyle Relay

Syracuse native Dana Vollmer was part of the U.S. team which won the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay on Wednesday at the 2012 London Olympics.

Vollmer, Missy Franklin, Shannon Vreeland and Allison Schmitt set an Olympic record in the process of winning the gold medal. Their time was 7:42.92 which broke the record set by Australian swimmers in Beijing in 2008 (7:44.31). Vollmer swam second during the relay. Schmitt swam the anchor leg and overtook the Australian Alicia Coutts to deliver the gold.

The Australian team finished 1.49 behind the U.S. to take the silver medal while France took bronze after finishing 4.57 behind the U.S. team.

Vollmer also won gold in the women's 100-meter butterfly, setting a world record in the process with a time of 55.98.
