London Olympics Medal Count: Rebecca Soni Helps U.S. Catch China

The U.S. was able to tie China in total medals (17) at the 2012 London Olympics on Monday.

New Jersey native Rebecca Soni's silver medal in the women's 100-meter breaststroke was part of the reason the U.S. caught up. Soni finished only eight-hundredths of a second behind 15-year-old Lithuanian swimmer Ruta Meilutyte. Soni also took home the silver medal in the event in Beijing in 2008. Soni still has two events left: 200-meter breaststroke and the 4x100 medley relay.

Canandaigua, N.Y. native Ryan Lochte finished fourth in the men's 200-meter freestyle. Lochte has three more events to go: 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 200 backstroke, 4x200 freestyle relay. He might also race in the 4x100 medley relay.

Bronx native John Orozco and the U.S. men's gymnastics team finished fifth on Monday. Orozco had a nightmare day on the vault and pommel horse. He bounced back on the parallel bars and horizontal bar. Orozco still has the individual finals ahead of him.

New Jersey native Maya Lawrence finished 16th in women's individual epee. The finish was a career-best in the fencing event for the 32-year-old.

The U.S. won a total of six medals on Monday. Matt Grevers won the gold in the men's 100m backstroke and Missy Franklin won gold in the women's 100m backstroke. The United States also had two silver medals and two bronze medals on Monday.
