The light heavyweight (178 pounds) men's boxing tournament of the 2012 Olympic Games began on Monday, and Staten Island native Marcus Browne was defeated in the first round by Australia's Damien Hooper, who won the match by 13-11 decision. The bout lasted just nine minutes.
Browne, 21, led 6-5 after the first two round but was dominated by Hooper in the third and final round by a score of 8-5.
In the end, Browne told the New York Daily News he should have listened to his corner:
"I was definitely (in control), but I didn't listen to my corner," he said. His corner told him to "take it to him," and to use his superior speed and athleticism, throwing flurries of punches instead of loading up on the power.
"No excuses. I lost. It's a learning experience," he said.
