The New York Yankees lost 3-2 in 10 innings to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night in Game 3 of the three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Russell Martin hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to send the game to extra innings, but Pedro Ciriaco hit a single scoring Jarrod Saltalamacchia off David Robertson (1-4) in the 10th for what would prove to be the winning run.
Martin had a spectacular night at the plate, batting in both of the Yankees' runs. He put New York on the board with a seventh-inning solo home run--his 29th homer on the year--and would go on to finish 2-for-2 with two walks. Unfortunately, he had no help from the top of the batting order. Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano went a combined 1-for-19 with one walk.
Felix Doubront out-dueled Hiroki Kuroda on the night, giving up just one earned run. Kuroda pitched well, but still gave up two earned runs off seven hits and a walk while striking out four in eight innings on the mound. The Red Sox scored two runs in the second inning. Adrian Gonzalez led off with a single, and Kuroda walked Jarrod Saltalamacchia to set up a two-RBI Ryan Sweeney single with two outs in the inning.
Alfredo Aceves (2-6) earned the win with a blown save. He gave up the game-tying single to Martin, but also held the Yankees scoreless in the ninth and 10th innings giving up just one hit and striking out two.
The Yankees will begin a three-game series with Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. ET. Freddy Garcia (4-4, 5.16 ERA) and the O's Miguel Gonzalez (2-2, 4.28) will be the Game 1 starting pitchers.
