London Olympics 2012: Dana Vollmer Wins Gold, Sets World Record in 100-Meter Butterfly

Dana Vollmer, a Syracuse native, set a world record in the 100-meter butterfly race on her way to winning the gold medal on Sunday. Vollmer led at the turn and hit the wall in 55.98 seconds to shave 0.08 off the earlier record set by Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden at the 2009 world championships in Rome.

With this record, Vollmer becomes the first woman in Olympic history to break the 56-second mark.

Vollmer, who missed qualifying for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, had set an Olympic record in Saturday morning's heats. Sjostrom came in fourth, sort of reminiscent of how Michael Phelps did the day before as the more popular swimmer, though Vollmer was the favorite.

Of course, Americans haven't been able to see this amazing feat yet, but NBC's tape delay will air later Sunday night.
