The Olympic Games begin this weekend as the full slate of events get underway, and the medal count is only one way to figure out which country is the most dominant at the Summer Games. The United States has a very good chance of winning gold medal count as well as the overall medals.
Heading into the Olympics, Sports Illustrated's Brian Cazeneuve went through each event and predict who would medal in each event. The end result had the United States winning the overall medal count with 99, and just edging out China who is projected to earn 97. As for the gold medal count a tie is predicted between the United States and China with 42 apiece.
