The New York Yankees lost 3-2 in 10 innings to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night in Game 3 of the three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Russell Martin hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to send the game to extra innings, but Pedro Ciriaco hit a single scoring Jarrod Saltalamacchia off David Robertson (1-4) in the 10th for what would prove to be the winning run.
Martin had a spectacular night at the plate, batting in both of the Yankees' runs. He put New York on the board with a seventh-inning solo home run--his 29th homer on the year--and would go on to finish 2-for-2 with two walks. Unfortunately, he had no help from the top of the batting order. Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano went a combined 1-for-19 with one walk.
Felix Doubront out-dueled Hiroki Kuroda on the night, giving up just one earned run. Kuroda pitched well, but still gave up two earned runs off seven hits and a walk while striking out four in eight innings on the mound. The Red Sox scored two runs in the second inning. Adrian Gonzalez led off with a single, and Kuroda walked Jarrod Saltalamacchia to set up a two-RBI Ryan Sweeney single with two outs in the inning.
Alfredo Aceves (2-6) earned the win with a blown save. He gave up the game-tying single to Martin, but also held the Yankees scoreless in the ninth and 10th innings giving up just one hit and striking out two.
The Yankees will begin a three-game series with Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. ET. Freddy Garcia (4-4, 5.16 ERA) and the O's Miguel Gonzalez (2-2, 4.28) will be the Game 1 starting pitchers.

Andy Pettitte has suffered a minor setback in his recovery from a fracture in his left fibula. The New York Yankees left-hander had to momentarily suspend his throwing program but is still looking to return in August.
"Doc said he was hoping it would be healed a little better than it was," Pettitte said. "The first two weeks it healed really quick and I feel like we have slowed down a little bit. He said, 'Let's try to stay off it a little bit.' That is where we are at."
Pettitte worked his way up to 55 pitches throwing off flat ground. Progress came a bit too quickly, however, and staying on his feet increased swelling around the ankle. Pettitte still has approximately one more month left on his 60-day stint on the disabled list, so there is still a chance he'll be ready to return as soon as he possibly can.

The Yankees and Red Sox have split the first two games of their three-game series this weekend, so the rubber match at Yankees Stadium on Sunday won't lack for drama at all. Even though the Yankees are at the very top of the division and the Red Sox stand in fifth, Boston has proved ready to give the Bombers a good run.
Hiroki Kuroda (10-7, 3.34 ERA) will face Felix Doubront (10-5, 4.54 ERA in the pitchers' duel.

Despite a late eighth inning rally led by first baseman Mark Teixeira, the New York Yankees were unable to defeat the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night, falling by a final score of 8-6.
The Yankees found themselves in an early hole after Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez doubled to score designated hitter Pedro Ciriaco. Third baseman Will Middlebrooks quickly followed that up with a double of his own to make the score 3-0 after one inning.
The Yankees responded in the third inning after a solo shot by catcher Chris Stewart, and both teams exchanged three runs each in the fifth to make the score 6-4. The Yankees managed to tie things up in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to a two run homer by Teixeira, but Boston regained the lead with two ninth inning runs to put the game out of reach.
Starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia was uncharacteristically off his game, allowing six runs (all earned) in six innings. He struck out six and gave up two walks.
The game was delayed for over two hours due to rain. It was originally slated to begin at 4:05 p.m. Eastern Time.
The loss drops the Yankees to 60-40 on the season, while the Red Sox improve to 50-51. The third and final game of the series will be played Sunday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

The New York Yankees (60-39) opened their series against the Boston Red Sox (49-51) with a 10-3 victory Friday night, improving their season record against their AL East rivals to 7-1. They look to continue that success Saturday as CC Sabathia (10-3 3.30 ERA) takes the mound, facing Jon Lester (5-8 5.46 ERA) for Boston.
Facing Boston has meant little but good times for the Yankees in 2012. They've scored 59 runs while winning six of seven, including 10 or more runs in three games. Curtis Granderson had a grand slam in Friday's victory and is 10-25 against Boston, and Russell Martin and Raul Ibanez both had home runs. They have to like their chances facing Lester, who allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings versus New York on July 8. The Boston starter has lost three in a row, including giving up 11 runs in a 15-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays last Sunday. The Yankees look to make it four running on Saturday afternoon.

Phil Hughes picked up the win for New York, improving to 10-8. He pitched seven innings, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out five and walking one. New York's offense was active all night, battering Red Sox starter Aaron Cook for six runs on seven hits in only four innings. Raul Ibanez, Russell Martin and Mark Teixeira picked up a pair of RBI each, and Curtis Granderson grabbed four RBI with a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory.
