The Yankees have a comfortable lead in the American League East, holding a 7-1/2 game lead over the Baltimore Orioles, while the Red Sox are 10-1/2 games behind the Yankees and 4-1/2 games behind the Oakland Athletics for the final American League Wild Card spot.
Phil Hughes (9-8, 4.09 ERA) will get the start for the Yankees, looking to continue his strong run of form over the past month. Hughes has not given up more than three earned runs in his last five starts, inlcuding his last outing against the Oakland Athletics on July 21. Hughes was a tough luck loser, giving up four hits and two runs in 7-2/3 innings in the Yankees 2-1 loss to the Athletics.
The Red Sox will counter with Aaron Cook (2-3, 3.50 ERA), who hasn't given up more than three earned runs in his last five starts. In his last outing against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 21. Cook gave up four hits and five runs, three earned, in 6-1/3 innings.
