The United States only led by one at the half and were tied late in the third quarter, but eventually, Kevin Durant and LeBron James made the shots to allow their team to pull away and earn a 107-100 victory and a gold medal for Team USA.
Spain played a spectacular game, with lots of foul calls slowing the tempo and preventing the United States from breaking and Pau Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro each playing phenomenally, finishing with 24 and 21, respectively. Durant nailed three after three to finish with 30 points, and a late three by James on a mismatch against Marc Gasol proved to be the dagger for the United States. James finished with 19 while Kobe Bryant had 17.
Players from New York's squads didn't have phenomenal games: Carmelo Anthony looked on pace to continue his unreal Olympic scoring with eight points in the opening minutes, but didn't score for the rest of the game, finishing with less points than shots. The Nets' Deron Williams drilled his only two three-point attempts of the game, but that was the extent of his performance off the bench. And Tyson Chandler didn't score after the game's opening basket as coach Mike Krzyzewski played eavy amounts of small-ball with Chandler on the bench, and when Chandler was in, he often looked outmatched by Gasol.
It's the second gold for Anthony and Williams, but the first for Chandler. If Anthony can continue his shooting from this tournament over into the NBA season, the Knicks will be thrilled.

Team USA went into halftime with a 59-58 lead over Spain in the gold medal game at the London Olympics on Sunday. The Americans were in control from the beginning, with a 35-27 lead after the first quarter despite the sharp shooting of Juan Carlos Navarro, who finished the half with 19 points
Then, Spain hit the U.S. hard with a 15-6 start to the second quarter. The Americans trailed briefly, but led by the scoring of Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony coming off the bench, they were able to make a run and regain the lead before halftime.
Durant went into the half with 17 points, while 'Melo and LeBron James have added eight points apiece. Navarro leads the Spaniards, but Rudy Fernandez also has 12 points, seven of them coming from the free throw line.

The rematch everyone was anticipating is finally here. Team USA men's basketball faces Spain on Sunday in the gold medal round of the London Olympics, looking for a second straight gold medal against this group.
Kevin Durant leads the Americans in scoring going into the game with 18.2 points a game, while New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony is chipping in 17.4 points a game, and off the bench at that.
This will be interesting for obvious reasons, but particularly since Team USA didn't see much of Marc Gasol in an exhibition game before the Olympics began. Team USA is the clear favorite here, but it will be interesting to see what kind of impact Spain having both of the Gasol brothers could have on the game.
There's also Russell Westbrook's mild ankle sprain to look out for, as his minutes could be limited. Westbrook is averaging just over nine points per contest off the bench.
Team USA and Spain are schedule to get started at 9 a.m. ET on NBC. You can find an online stream of the event right here.

However, the hot shooting continued for the U.S. and the lead grew even more which allowed for a comfortable win.
Kevin Durant led the U.S. with 19 points. LeBron James chipped in 18 points. Kobe Bryant had 13 first-half points which led the U.S. at the break. Manu Ginobili led Argentina with 18 points.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Men's Basketball team plays Australia in the quarterfinal of the 2012 London Olympics.
So far, the United States has resembled a machine. While they've had occasional struggles for a half here and there, the Americans have mostly been dominant. In group play they breezed through undefeated, highlighted by the 83-point victory they had against Nigeria that shattered just about every Olympic record.
Head coach Mike Krzyzewski has pushed all the right buttons as he so often does. Now approaching crunch time, the U.S. team faces the Australians as heavy favorites.
Australia has gotten to this point by taking care of business against Group B, including a glorious win over Russia at the buzzer on a Patty Mills 3-pointer. However, the Aussies aren't expected to keep this one close considering the talent gap between the two foes.
If the Americans can hold on, they'll move one step closer to capturing gold as the often-compared 92' Dream Team did.

Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams had five points, five assists, two rebounds and a steal in 15 minutes of action.
After leading by just one point at halftime, 60-59, the U.S. exploded in the third quarter for 42 points. Kevin Durant scored 17 points in the quarter after LeBron James got the U.S. off to a hot start. The defense was also ratcheted up for the U.S. in the quarter and Argentina had just 17 points after scoring at least 27 in the first two frames. In the fourth quarter, the U.S. emptied their bench, as did Argentina.
Durant, who was 8-of-10 from behind the arc, led all scorers with 28 points. LeBron James had 18 points. Kevin Love, Kobe Bryant, Andre Iguodala and Chris Paul all reached double figures in scoring. Manu Ginobili had 16 points (all in the first half) to lead Argentina in scoring.

The Team USA men's basketball team leads Argentina, 60-59, at halftime in a Group A game at the 2012 London Olympics. New York area athletes did not have a good half against Argentina.
New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony had been leading the U.S. and was the fourth-leading scorer in the Olympics coming into the game against Argentina. He had a rough first half against Argentina and had to sit with two fouls. He was 0-for-4 from the floor and had just two points and three rebounds. Knicks center Tyson Chandler had three fouls, three rebounds and a blocked shot in the first half. Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams also ran into foul trouble and had two fouls an assist and a steal in the first half.
Argentina shot 55.9 percent from the field in the first half but the U.S. was able to use the turnover advantage (8-3) to grab a one-point lead at halftime. The U.S. led by just two after a well-played first quarter by both teams that ended 34-32. Three-point shooting has not been an issue for either team. The U.S. hit 9-of-22 from behind the arc while Argentina has hit 7-of-15 three-point attempts. Surprisingly, the U.S. is only 8-of-20 from inside the arc.
Chris Paul led the U.S. with 14 points in the half. Kevin Durant chipped in 11 points. Argentina's Manu Ginobili led all scores with 16 first-half points. Leonardo Gutierrez had 11 points for Argentina.

Team USA Basketball defeated Nigeria, 156-73, in Group A play at the 2012 London Olympics on Thursday. The score put up by the U.S. was an Olympic record. It was not the only record set on Thursday.
New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony set a record for most points scored by a U.S. player in the Olympics with 37 on 13-of-16 shooting. Anthony hit 10 three-pointers. Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams had 13 points and 10 assists off the bench. Knicks center Tyson Chandler had two points and five rebounds.
The U.S. got off to a 13-0 start and did not look back. Wide open three-pointers and dunks helped Team USA build a 49-25 lead after the first quarter. By halftime, the U.S. had 78 points and knew they had a chance to smash records. The scoring onslaught continued in the second half with 41 points in the third quarter and 31 points in the fourth quarter. The team finished with a U.S. record 29 made threes on 46 attempts. The 83-point margin of victory was also a record.
Kobe Bryant scored 16 in the first half for the U.S. while Kevin Durant had 14 points. Russell Westbrook scored 21 points and Kevin Love had 15 points for the game. Ike Diogu had 27 points and seven rebounds to lead Nigeria.

Team USA Basketball leads Nigeria, 78-45, after the first half of play in a Group A game at the 2012 London Olympics.
New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony was nearly perfect in the first half of play. He shot 7-for-9 from the floor and led the team with 19 points. Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams was 3-4 from the floor and had seven points off the bench. Knicks center Tyson Chandler had two points and three rebounds in the first half.
The U.S. got off to a blistering pace from behind the three-point arc on mostly uncontested shots. There were also plenty of unguarded dunks on layups in a 49-point first quarter by the U.S. Given that they could seemingly score on every possession, the defense was lax by the United States in the first half which allowed Nigeria to score 25 in the first quarter. In the second quarter Nigeria played better while scoring less but the U.S.' lead only increased to the very impressive 33-point lead. The U.S. hit 14-of-25 from behind the arc for the first half.
Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant also reached double figures in the first half with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Nigeria was led by Ike Diogu who had 15 points in the half on 7-of-10 shooting.

Both of New York City's NBA teams are represented on Team USA at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London this year. The Knicks claim Carmello Anthony and Tyson Chandler on the roster, and Brooklyn Nets star Deron Williams represents the city's other team. Team USA is favored by 42 points in their Thursday game against Nigeria.
The talent gap between the two teams is notable, as it has been with most of Team USA's opponents over the years. Nigeria does have a pair of NBA players on the squad, Al-Farouq Aminu of the Houston Rockets and well-traveled journeyman Ike Diogu.
Chandler could see plenty of work against Diogu, but there is not much of a matchup for him. Carmelo Anthony, part of the deep Team USA bench, could see plenty of work again, after helping Team USA power through the Tunisians in their last game.
The game starts at 5;15 p.m. ET. The NBC Sports Network will carry the live broadcast, and streaming options are available from NBCOlympics.com.

Chandler appeared to hit his hand on the rim in the second half and was seen on the bench with an ice pack on the hand.
The U.S. struggled from behind the arc in the first half, shooting just two for 12 from three-point range. The U.S. only managed to lead Tunisia by 13 points at the half. The U.S. had no such problems in the second half, hitting eight of their 13 three-point shots. Team USA Basketball leads Tunisia at halftime, 46-33, at the 2012 London Olympics in men's Group A play on Tuesday. New York area athletes had plenty to do with the first half lead for the U.S.
New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony came off the bench and was second on the team in points with seven in a perfect first half from the floor. Kevin Durant led the U.S. with nine points and seven rebounds. Makrem Ben Romdhane, of Tunisia, led all scorers with 13 first-half points.

So it turns out that Drake and Chris Brown's confrontation at a New York nightclub that resulted in Tony Parker's eye injury didn't ruin Parker's eye or the opening Olympic basketball matchup between Team USA and France. Everything went along as planned, as the Americans used the second and third quarters to separate themselves from the Frenchmen and win, 98-71
Team USA led by just one point following the first quarter, but in the second they took off and outscored France, 30-15. They picked up where they left off in the third quarter as well, before being neutralized in the fourth. But at that point, Team USA was already in control.
Kevin Durant led the way for the Americans with 22 points and nine rebounds. Kevin Love put up 14 points, while Kobe Bryant added 10. Carmelo Anthony had nine points and nine boards, while Tyson Chandler chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.
Ali Traore put up 12 points to lead France, while Tony Parker added 10.

New York Knicks' fans can only wish that star forward Carmelo Anthony could be as comfortable, and play as effortlessly, for the Knicks, as he appears to play for the Team USA men's basketball team.
"This whole experience, every time I come back from playing USA Basketball, my mindset is a lot different," Anthony said late Tuesday night after the Americans' surprisingly comfortable win at the Palau Sant Jordi. "The team-oriented atmosphere I bring back to my team, the focus that I have, my conditioning and carrying that into the regular season, it’s like I’m getting an early start. In ’08 coming off a gold medal going into the 2009 season, that was one of my best seasons. My body felt great; my mind felt great. That’s something I keep in the back of my mind coming off USA Basketball."
Here is a little more of the mellow 'Melo:
"I don’t like it better than NBA basketball. I play NBA basketball, that’s my career, that’s my life blood," Anthony said. "But FIBA basketball allows me to play multiple positions and do a lot of different things out there on the basketball court than I do in the NBA. I’m in a different position, I play the 3, the 4, the 5. I don’t play the 5 back in the NBA. Over here, with these guys on the team, it’s more playing off of them, doing some dirty work, when the ball comes to you trying to knock down shots, rebounding. Most of the times I’m playing against 4s and 5s, and it’s a much more physical game than in the NBA. I won’t be playing the 5 in New York, I know that.

Team USA men's basketball concluded its exhibition schedule Tuesday, as they easily defeated Spain 100-78 in Barcelona. The victory helped USA finish its warm-up tour with a perfect 5-0 record, and according to its assistant head coach Jim Boeheim, so far, its been a lot of fun:
Sometime during the third quarter on Tuesday night, Kobe Bryant came back to our bench and said, "This is fun."
And you know something? He was right. This is fun. This is a fun team to coach. And this is a fun team to watch.
Boeheim, who's real job is to serve as the head coach of Syracuse University men's basketball, is serving as an assistant for USA's head coach Mike Krzyzewski. This is the second Olympics in a row Boeheim is helping out his friend.
In the win over second-ranked Spain, it was Boeheim's former player, Carmelo Anthony, who netted 23 of his team-high 27 in the first half, that helped Team USA comeback from an early deficit. In the end, said Boeheim, it was a solid victory:
But it was a good win, too, because of the way we won. We had to come from behind against one of the best teams in the world with players like Pau Gasol (19 points) and Serge Ibaka (16 points) out there. It was also a good win because they got 30 free throws and we got only 15. But that’s international ball. That’s pretty normal. The Team USA men's basketball team defeated Spain, 100-78, in a pre-Olympic exhibition game on Tuesday in Barcelona, Spain. The Spanish team is considered the USA's biggest threat to Olympic gold.
The final score is not really an indication of how close the game was in the first half. If not for three goaltending calls against Spain forward Serge Ibaka, the score might have been even tighter at the half than a 48-40 U.S. lead. Spain actually got off to a good start and had a 14-9 early lead due to easy looks for Ibaka, who had 16 points in the first half.
In the second half, the U.S. built a 15-point lead which would hold for the duration. Kevin Durant piled in 10 of his 13 points in the first three and half minutes of the second half to pace the U.S. early in the half. New York Knicks center Tyson Chandler ran into foul trouble once again. He fouled out with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter after playing just eight minutes. Not having the center did not matter as LeBron James picked up where Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony, who had 23 first-half points, left off scoring wise in the second half.
Anthony led Team USA with 27 points off the bench. James had 25 points for the game. Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams played 18 minutes and had four points and an assist. Pau Gasol led Spain with 19 points as Ibaka could not add a single point to his first half total.

The USA Men's Basketball team will end is exhibition tour Tuesday (4:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2), when they face Spain in Barcelona for a tune-up match for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. This will be the the last exhibition contest for both USA and Spain, who both will enter the games as FIBA's No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams, respectively.
Team USA will be looking to end its exhibition schedule with a perfect 5-0 record, as well as improving its FIBA record over Spain to 6-1. The last time these two countries met was at the '08 Olympic Games, where USA downed Spain 118-107 in the Gold Medal Game.
Entering the Olympics, Spain is suppose to be USA's No. 1 foe as they feature a handful of NBAers -- center Pau Gasol (Los Angeles Lakers), guard José Calderón (Toronto Raptors), Víctor Claver (Portland Trailblazers), Marc Gasol (Memphis Grizzles) and Serge Ibaka (Oklahoma City Thunder).
However, Spain will have a hard time matching up with a squad that features Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams, New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony and center Tyson Chandler coming off the bench.
