The New York Mets were defeated by the Atlanta Braves, 6-1, on Sunday at Turner Field. New York dropped all three games of three-game series.
Andres Torres got the only run of the game across for the Mets in the seventh inning on an RBI single. However, by then the damage had already been done. Atlanta put all six runs across in the fifth inning. Michael Bourn started the scoring off with an RBI double. Martin Prado then hit a sacrifice fly. Jason Heyward hit an RBI single before Freddie Freeman cleared the bases with one swing on his three-run shot.
Johan Santana (3.59 ERA) got the start but dropped to 6-6 on the season in a loss. Santana went five innings and gave up eight hits, six earned runs and two walks while he struck out three batters. Ben Sheets went six innings for Atlanta in the win. Sheets was sharp giving up only two hits and one walk while allowing zero runs and striking out five batters. This was his first start in two seasons.
The Mets (46-43) will begin their next series against the Washington Nationals (51-35) on Tuesday at Nationals Park.

After back-to-back days of bad pitching performances leading to losses, the New York Mets are hoping Sunday their ace Johan Santana can right all the pitching wrongs when he faces the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field (1:35 p.m. ET on SNY).
The Mets (46-42), losers of four straight and five of their last six, dropped the first two games of the three-games set thanks to a bad start from starting pitcher Chris Young, who lasted just three innings on Friday, and a blown save from newly appointed closer Bobby Parnell on Saturday.
Santana (6-5, 3.24 ERA) will try and help out his team by rebounding for a poor performance in his last start, which featured him allowing seven runs against the Chicago Cubs. Meanwhile, the Braves (48-39) will start former Milwaukee Brewers ace Ben Sheets.
Sheets will be making his first start since July 19, 2010, when he played for the Oakland A's. Since then, Sheets has been recovering from Tommy John surgery.

The New York Mets looked for a while like they were going to walk away with a victory to even their series with the Atlanta Braves. It turned out that wasn't the case.
Bobby Parnell blew his first save since taking over for regular closer Frank Francisco, when he gave up three runs in the eighth inning to cost New York its lead.
The Braves scored all three times with two outs, with RBI singles by Michael Bourn, Martin Prado and Jason Heyward in succession.
Despite a mediocre outing from R.A. Dickey, the Mets were able to take the lead in the sixth after trailing throughout the game. Justin Turner, Ruben Tejada and Jordany Valdespin singled in runs to take a 6-5 lead and kept Dickey in line to attain his 13th win of the season.
Dickey's final line was five runs allowed on eight hits and two walks in five innings. He also struck out four.
Andres Torres had the best day at the dish for the Amazins'. Torres went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
On Sunday, New York will try to avoid the sweep at Turner Field when Johan Santana takes the hill against Ben Sheets, who's making his first appearance as a Brave.

The New York Mets remain in the NL Wild Card hunt largely because of a starting rotation that ranks fourth in ERA among National League teams. But their rotation has been decimated because of injury, and the Mets could soon be looking for a fifth starter. If it becomes a dire need, the Mets might even consider rushing one of their two best minor league pitching prospects.
Miguel Batista, who appeared in relief Friday night, is expected to get the first crack at the opening. But if he falters, the Mets could be forced to turn to young prospects who they don't feel are particularly ready.
According to the New York Post, Matt Harvey could be next in line after Batista. The Mets are hesitant to promote Harvey, the seventh overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, because they feel the right-hander still needs work. But the 23-year-old has been impressive at Triple-A Buffalo, where he is 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 18 starts.
An intriguing option outside of Harvey is Zack Wheeler, who hasn't yet pitched a single Triple-A game. The Post notes that Wheeler, the Mets' top prospect, has a season cap of approximately 150 innings and has already pitched 92 2/3. But the 22-year-old righty has dominated his first stint in Double-A this season, compiling an 8-4 record with a 2.62 ERA in 15 starts.

The New York Mets continue a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves on Saturday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. ET at Turner Field. (TV Schedule: Fox)
The Mets resumed play after the All-Star break on Friday night to poor reviews. Starting pitcher Chris Young surrendered five runs in just three innings as New York fell to Atlanta, 7-5, to drop 1.5 games behind the Braves in the NL Wild Card race.
R.A. Dickey will look to build on his fantastic first half for the Mets, with a chance to earn his 11th straight win. The Braves will counter with Tommy Hanson.

The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves by a final score of 7-5 Friday night, losing Game 1 of the three game series. The offense was active, but they were unable to make up for the Mets pitching.
Starting pitcher Chris Young was pulled after only three innings and gave up six hits and five runs. Miguel Batista took the mound in relief and had things under control for one inning, but he was pulled after walking the bases loaded in the fourth. Josh Edgin was next, making his MLB debut. He bailed out Batista, getting two strikeouts to end the inning. That luck didn't last as Chipper Jones took Edgin deep in the sixth with a solo home run, and the rookie left the game after giving up a double to Freddie Freeman. Freeman then scored on a single by Dan Uggla to give the Braves a 7-4 lead. The Mets managed one more run in the top of the eighth inning but would come no closer.
Scott Hairston, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Ruben Tejada and Andres Torres all had RBI for the Mets, with Nieuwenhuis picking up a pair.
The Mets drop to 46-41 with the loss, as well as falling to 1.5 games behind Atlanta in the Wild Card race. Game 2 is is Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET.

The New York Mets have signed veteran pitcher C.J. Nitkowski, according to his Twitter (via MLB Rumors).
I haven't pitched in AA in 17 yrs but you take an opportunity when it presents itself & run with it. This is it, last shot. Thank you @Mets
— CJ Nitkowski (@CJNitkowski) July 13, 2012
As his tweet mentions, he will be reporting to the Double-A Binghamton Mets. The 39-year-old lefty last pitched in the majors with the Washington Nationals in 2005, and has been active in Japan and Korea. He auditioned for the Mets back in March, and according to those reports he's transitioned to throwing sidearm. The former first round pick played for seven teams over ten years in the majors, posting an 18-32 record. He's also a local, born in Suffern, New York and graduating from St. Johns in Queens.

New York Mets pitcher Dillon Gee underwent successful surgery on his shoulder to repair a damaged artery on Friday, according to the team.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Thompson at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. The Mets said that they expect Gee to be discharged from the hospital on Tuesday or Wednesday. The team did not have a timetable on Gee's return to throwing or other baseball activities (via Mets Twitter).
Gee was first hospitalized on July 10 with finger numbness which was later found to have been caused by a blood clot in his throwing shoulder. Gee was placed on the 15-day disabled list. A catheter was used to break up the clot and it was determined at that time that surgery was need to repair an artery in Gee's shoulder.
The right-hander is is 6-7 this season with a 4.10 ERA. Relief pitcher Josh Edgin has been called up to replace Gee on the roster.

The New York Mets have announced that they will call up relief pitcher Josh Edgin on Friday to replace Dillon Gee on their active roster.
Edgin, a 25-year old lefty, has yet to make his major league debut after being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 50th round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft. He is 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 37 innings over 35 appearances in Triple-A Buffalo this season.
Gee will undergo surgery Friday in St. Louis to replace a portion of damaged artery, and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. He was released from the hospital on Wednesday after being admitted for a blood clot in his right (pitching) shoulder. The surgery is designed to keep Gee from getting another similar blood clot in the future.
