New York Mets pitcher Dillon Gee could now be shut down for the season as he will need surgery on Friday to repair damage to a shoulder artery (via New York Daily News). Gee was hospitalized on Monday for a blood clot in his pitching shoulder which was causing finger numbness. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. Doctors used a catheter to break up the clot.
Gee's surgery will be performed by Dr. Robert Thompson at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. While the young right-hander could resume throwing in six to eight weeks, his return before the end of the season does not appear likely.
In 17 starts, Gee is 6-7 this season with a 4.10 ERA.
