2012 U.S. Open Golf Highlights: Webb Simpson's Up And Down On 18th Hole Tops Highlights

Webb Simpson thought his ball might have been resting on top of a sprinkler head in the rough next to the 18th green on Sunday at the Olympic Club, so he asked for a ruling on whether he could receive a free drop.

It was the final round of the 2012 U.S. Open, and Simpson was tied for the lead. He didn't know, but Jim Furyk was in the process of bogeying the 16th hole, leaving a window for Simpson to seize the advantage if he could get up and down from the rough.

Simpson was told he could not get a drop. Instead, he chipped to within three feet and sunk the putt to remain 1-over par. When Furyk and Graeme McDowell both failed to birdie the 18th, Simpson became the U.S. Open champion.

2012 U.S. Open Golf Results: Webb Simpson Takes The Trophy

After four rigorous rounds of golf, Webb Simpson took hold of his first major victory at the 2012 U.S. Open. He can be even more satisfied having done it at one of the toughest courses going, the Olympic Club of San Francisco.

Simpson won with a furious charge on Sunday to blow by a struggling Jim Furyk, who just couldn't make any shots to close out the tournament. Graeme McDowell was right there all weekend, but he couldn't overtake Simpson at the end.

Tiger Woods never made the move some expected on Sunday. After looking like the favorite the first two days, Woods came apart with a 75 on Saturday, knocking him off the top of the leaderboard.

The real story was Simpson, who made key putts down the stretch and a sensational run of four birdies in five holes. Simpson was able to stay on track despite nerves, challenging pin locations and, at times, unfortunate weather.

U.S. Open Championship Winner 2012: Webb Simpson Tops Jim Furyk At Olympic Club

Webb Simpson won the 2012 U.S. Open with a 2-under 68 on Sunday at the Olympic Club. He overtook Jim Furyk from the clubhouse to finish at 1-over for the Open. Simpson shot 2-over through his first five holes, but recovered with four birdies on his next five holes on the unforgiving course.

Furyk entered Sunday tied for the lead with Graeme McDowell at 1-under overall. He faltered down the back stretch, however, shooting bogeys on hole Nos. 13, 16 and 18 to drop to 4-over on the day, and 3-over for the tournament.

McDowell started the day 5-over through the front nine. He shot 1-under over the back nine, including a birdie on No. 17 to put him one stroke off Simpson. McDowell missed a roughly 10-foot putt for birdie on No. 18, however, giving Simpson his first win at a major tournament.

McDowell finished at 2-over along with Day 1 leader Michael Thompson. Furyk finished at 3-over along with David Toms, John Peterson, Padraig Harrington and Jason Dufner.

2012 U.S. Open Golf Leaderboard: Jim Furyk Leads, At Even Heading Into Back 9

Jim Furyk is at 1-over through nine holes at the 2012 U.S. Open, and even overall as hangs on to a one stroke lead over Webb Simpson. Furyk has parred every single hole at the Olympic Club outside of a bogey on No. 6 on Sunday. He has the back nine left to play.

Simpson has shot 2-under through 11 holes, coming off an impressive 68 on Saturday. He is on a particularly strong tear at the moment, having birdied four of his last six holes after starting the day plus-2 through five.

Michael Thompson and John Peterson are well within striking distance, just two shot off the lead. Thompson finished the day at 3-under to give himself a chance at a U.S. Open title from the clubhouse, presuming he gets some help from the two men ahead of him. Peterson is 1-under Sunday with three holes left to play.

2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard: Keegan Bradley Finishes Tournament 18-Over-Par, Hurts Ryder Cup Chances?

St. John's grad Keegan Bradley finished his fourth round at the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA with a 7-over-par 77. That round put Bradley at 18-over-par for the tournament.

The poor finish to the U.S. Open could hurt Bradley's chances of making the Ryder Cup team. Qualification for the team is based on a points system drawn from a player's finish in major championships and other events. The top eight players automatically qualify for the team. Bradley is currently in the eighth spot but seems destined to finish behind Steve Stricker and and Rickie Fowler in the U.S. Open. Stricker is currently 11th and Fowler is currently 9th in the standings.

A full, current listing of the 2012 Ryder Cup standings can be found here, and a live leaderboard for the 2012 U.S. Open can be found at USOpen.com.

Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell are tied for the lead in the tournament at 1-under-par. Neither golfer is on the course yet on Sunday.

U.S. Open 2012: Keegan Bradley Needs Strong Round 4 To Bolster Ryder Cup Hopes

After three rounds at the 2012 U.S. Open, St. John's graduate Keegen Bradley currently stands at 11-over, well out of contention. Despite that, he should still have plenty of motivation for Round 4. Bradley is on pace to qualify for the U.S. team in the 2012 Ryder Cup, and his performance on Sunday will have a direct impact on that.

Qualifying for the Ryder Cup is based on a points system, with the basis for points being prize money won in major championships and other official events. The top eight men in the standings automatically qualify for a spot on the team, and Bradley currently sits in eighth. Some of the men not far behind him in the standings, like Rickie Fowler and Steve Stricker, are ahead of him at the U.S. Open. After posting a 73 in each of the first two rounds, Bradley struggled on Saturday and posted a 75. If he wants to avoid losing ground in the Ryder Cup standings, he'll need his best performance of the week in Round 4.

A full, current listing of the 2012 Ryder Cup standings can be found here, and a live leaderboard for the 2012 U.S. Open can be found at USOpen.com.

U.S. Open Golf 2012: Jim Furyk On Round 4 Expectations, Tiger Woods And More

Round 3 of the 2012 U.S. Open concluded with Jim Furyk tied for first place with Graeme McDowell at 1-under-par. Furyk is the current favorite to win the tournament, and his interview after Round 3 gave some insight into how he thinks he can accomplish that. Acknowledging the trouble the course at the Olympic Club has given the field so far, he stressed patience:

It is a little bit of a struggle at times. I think you have to bide your time and get through certain holes each day trying to make pars. And there will be a couple of opportunities you get. There are some‑‑ if you can drive the ball in the fairway, there are some places you can get short irons in your hand and there are some pins that you can attack. You just have to be patient and wait for those moments instead of trying to force them.

With more than 10 golfers within four strokes of the lead, Furyk is aware that it's likely to be a tight finish:

Graeme and I are tied for the lead, but there's a bunch of people piled up and close to it. Obviously I like being up front in the position I'm in. The golf course will take its effect on a bunch of people. And the guys that go out there and deal with the conditions and the situations the best and find a way to get through those difficult holes with par and limit their bogeys and take advantage of some situations where you can make birdie, those are the guys that are have some success and have an opportunity to win the last few holes.

Tiger Woods struggled in Round 3, shooting 5-over to land at 4-over for the tournament thus far. Asked about Woods, Furyk was complimentary and wouldn't count him out:

So he's 5 shots back. I think he's probably disappointed with the 18th hole. And 16, 17, 18 with the finish, being 3‑over par, if he gets it in with a birdie or so on the way in, he's only two shots back, to make two bogeys and maybe five back is probably disappointing.

He's come from farther back before. And I don't think he's really too worried about the disarray, or I forget what the other term you used, at the moment. He's probably already flipped the page and worried about what he needs to do to play well tomorrow.

It's crowded at the top of the leaderboard, but Round 4 is likely to see some men rise to the occasion and others fold. The top 10 start teeing off around 5:30 EDT, with leaders Furyk and McDowell at 6:10pm.

U.S. Open Golf Leaderboard 2012: St. John's Alum Bradley Falls

St. John's alum Keegan Bradley started the third round of the 2012 U.S. Open on Saturday in 42nd place after posting a +6 through the first two days of play. But after a disappointing afternoon in which he finished with a 75, Bradley finds himself tied for 61st place with a score of 11-over par as the third round continues for other golfers.

It was an up and down day for Bradley, who double bogeyed on the ninth hole but managed to salvage his score by turning in birdies on holes 12 and 18. He will finish up his last round of the tournament tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Jim Furyk remains at the top of the leaderboard through 11 holes on Saturday. He is even on the day and 1-under overall.

2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard: Retief Goosen Rises Up Leaderboard

Keegan Bradley, from St. John's, ranks near the bottom of the leaderboard at the 2012 US Open. The former Red Storm made the cut at 6-over, but has struggled on the third day, to a tune of 5-over through 14 holes in Round 3 (11-over for the tournament). Only five remaining players currently have lower scores than Bradley.

The top 10 remains relatively unshaken, given most players have yet to tee off on Saturday. David Toms, Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods lead the way at 1-under – all three are set to tee off at approximately 6 p.m. Eastern.

Retief Goosen started the day tied for 29th, but is 1-under through seven holes and 4-over for the tournament, now finds himself only five strokes behind the lead.

2012 U.S. Open: Tiger Woods 'Just Plodding Along'

Tied for the lead at 1-under par halfway through the U.S. Open, Tiger Woods is well positioned to make a run at the 15th major title of his illustrious career. He knows the Olympic Club course will present a huge challenge the next two days.

“This tournament you just plodding along. This is a different tournament. You have to stay patient, got to stay present, and you’re just playing for a lot of pars. This is not a tournament where we have to make a bunch of birdies. Just got to just hang in there with a bunch of pars,” Woods said.

Woods will be in the final pairing today, along with co-leader Jim Furyk. David Toms is also 1-under for the tournament.

“I think I’m in a good spot,” Woods said.

2012 U.S. Open Golf Scores And Results: Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk And David Toms Tied For First After Round 2

Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk and David Toms all stand at 1-under-par, tied for the lead after two rounds of the 2012 U.S. Open golf tournament. Furyk managed to improve on his opening around 70 and post a 69, while both Woods and Toms did a fraction worse than they did on Thursday and moved from 69 to 70. Woods in particular seemed to struggle, hitting three straight bogeys on holes five through seven, but he was able to recover and post par for the day.

St. John's graduate Keegan Bradley shot a 73, an echo of his opening around score. That puts him at 6-over for the tournament, tied for 42nd place and well within the cut. The 8-over cut was less kind to some notable names, including 2011 U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. His 73 was an improvement from his Round 1 score of 77, but that left him at 10-over and on the wrong side of the cut. Phil Mickelson just made it by, picking up a late birdie on the day's final hole and ending the day at 7-over in total. Master champion Bubba Watson had the opposite experience, and even with two late birdies on holes 15 and 17 he ended at 9-over and is done for the weekend.

With a course as challenging as the Olympic Club it's anyone's tournament heading into the weekend, so expect plenty of exciting golf. A full leaderboard can be found at USOpen.com.

2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard: Keegan Bradley Makes Turn At 5-Over-Par For Tournament

St. John's graduate Keegan Bradley is in good shape to make the cut at the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Halfway through his Friday round, Bradley is 2-over-par on the day and 5-over-par for the tournament. The projected cut is at 8-over-par.

Bradley's struggles during Thursday's 3-over-par 73 came on the back nine with two bogies and a double bogey. On Friday, he still had two bogies but no further damage. Bradley has hit 20 of 28 greens in regulation and 11 of 22 fairways in regulation, but is 0-4 on sand saves.

Bradley is currently tied for 34th. 2003 U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk is currently leading the tournament with a score of 1-under-par. Furyk's round is finished.

New Jersey resident Brian Gaffney will miss the cut at the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA after finishing his Thursday and Friday rounds at a combined 15-over-par.

U.S. Open Golf Leaderboard 2012: Rory McIlroy Could Miss Cut

Defending U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy is in danger of missing the cut at the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA.

After two rounds, McIlroy is in the clubhouse with a score of 10-over-par. His Thursday round of a 7-over-par 77 was the real killer. On Friday, he bounced back with a 3-over-par 73 round. McIlory hit 52.78% of the greens in regulation (19 of 36) and 53.57% of the fairways in regulation (15 of 28). He was only 1 of 4 on sand saves on Thursday and Friday.

If McIlroy does indeed miss the cut, which is projected to be at 8-over-par, it will be the second time he's missed the cut at the U.S. Open Championship in the last three years.

2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard: Tiger Woods Shoots 1-Under-Par In First Round, Sticks To Game Plan

Tiger Woods finished the first round of the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco with a 1-under-par round, which was good enough for a tie for third place on Thursday.

One of his playing partners, Bubba Watson, said about Tiger's performance, "Today he was just the old Tiger. It's just one of those things. He's won twice this year, so he's doing pretty good." (via ASAP Sports) Watson did not fare as well as Tiger Woods and shot an 8-over-par 78 on Thursday. The other player in the group, Phil Mickelson, shot a 6-over-par 76.

Woods said about his first round, "I played well today. I felt like I had control of my game all day and just stuck to my game plan and executed my game plan." (via ASAP Sports) He also added that he was content with the round and how he executed his shots on the course. Woods is currently tied with four other players and trails leader Michael Thompson by three shots.

2012 U.S. Open Golf Leaderboard: Keegan Bradley Four Shots Back After 35 On Front Nine

Keegan Bradley recovered from bogeys on his first and second holes to make the turn at 1-over par during his opening round Thursday at the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

The St. John's grad bounced back after the two bogeys with four consecutive pars, followed by a birdie on hole No. 7. He makes the turn in a tie for 22nd place, just four shots behind leader Jason Bohn (3-under).

The featured group of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson teed off on the back nine on Thursday morning. Though Watson (7-over par through 13 holes) and Mickelson (4-over) struggled desperately to find a rhythm, Woods (even-par) managed to stay away from too much trouble and was three shots back of the leaders after 13 holes.

2012 US Open: Tiger Woods The Favorite, But Course May Decide The Outcome

The odds once again favor Tiger Woods as the golf world gets ready for the 2012 U.S. Open, its second major tournament of the year. The Olympic Club, the San Francisco course where the tournament takes place this year, is an unforgiving place, and Woods the favorite could quickly turn to Woods the disappointment.

SB Nation's Brian Floyd is on the scene in the Bay Area with an assessment of things on the course.

But the real winner may be the golf course, which is well on its way to standing over a trembling field, posing in celebration having conquered the world's best.

The course mandates that Woods, and any other player, is on top of their game, hitting the ball as well as they have ever hit it. As for Woods, here is Floyd's assessment:

There's no question Woods is the favorite, but he was at The Masters, too. And we all saw what happened. If he's striking the ball well -- and he's been pretty good during his practice rounds -- watch out. If he's fighting his swing, his week will spiral out of control in a hurry. The Olympic Course is too punishing for his swing to be even just a bit off.

Woods tees off at 7:33 a.m. on Thursday morning, paired with Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson.

2012 U.S. Open Golf: Olympic Club Course Tutorial

The 2012 U.S. Open begins Thursday at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA. Rory McIlroy set the event's scoring record with a 16-under par week at Congressional last year, but nobody expects the record to fall again this year.

Olympic is just too tough.

The rough is fierce and the greens are small and unforgiving. Bubba Watson said he doesn't like the course largely because he's afraid he might shoot an 80.

SB Nation's Brian Floyd wrote an Olympic Club course tutorial which described the 2012 U.S. Open site as "brutal." He called the opening six holes "a brutal stretch that can quickly derail a round before it truly gets started" while noting that the finishing three holes also feature all sorts of trouble.

Read Floyd's entire piece if you want a better understanding of the Olympic Club.

2012 U.S. Open Golf Odds: Tiger Woods Remains The Favorite

The 2012 U.S. Open is only a day away and the anticipation is building to a fine crescendo.

While all of the prognostications are being made, BOVADA has listed Tiger Woods as their favorite at 13/2 odds on Wednesday morning.

Woods isn't an overwhelming favorite even after his victory at Jack Nicklaus' course just a few weeks ago. However, he's almost been given double the odds that Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, both of whom are tied for second in the odds at 11/1.

Phil Mickelson is a tempting play at 20/1 while Rory McIlroy comes in at 14/1. McIlroy hasn't been playing well lately, but sometimes the majors can bring out greatness.

Keegan Bradley, the St. John's alum, is sitting with 66/1 odds, a heavy underdog but still an interesting long-shot pick considering his skill and track record.

Here's a list of the odds as of Wednesday morning:

Tigers Woods 13/2

Luke Donald: 11/1

Lee Westwood: 11/1

Rory McIlroy: 14/1

Phil Mickelson: 20/1

Dustin Johnson: 25/1

Jason Dufner: 25/1

Justin Rose: 28/1

Matt Kuchar: 28/1

Adam Scott: 33/1

Jim Furyk: 33/1

Rickie Fowler: 33/1
