French Open Results 2012: Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer Survive, While Victoria Azarenka Tumbles Sunday

The top seeds on the men's draw at the 2012 French Open continue to push their way through the tournament, though No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Roger Federer struggled at times during five and four set victories, respectively, on Sunday. Meanwhile, an upset-filled women's draw claimed its biggest victim yet at Roland Garros, as No. 1 Victoria Azarenka fell in two sets to No. 15 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.

Djokovic eventually downed No. 22 Andreas Seppi of Italy, 4-6, 6-7 (12), 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. The Serbian champion was broken three times in the first two sets. He fired back in the third set, breaking Seppi four times in five chances. He won three straight sets from the brink of elimination to move on to the quarterfinals, where he will face the winner between No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka and No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Federer won in four sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, over David Goffin of Belgium. Like Djokovic, Federer got off to a slow start before winning three consecutive sets to persevere. He had 17 unforced errors in the first set to just six for his opponent. Ultimately, Federer proved too overpowering, especially on the serve where he reeled off 12 aces to four for his opponent. Federer will face either No. 9 Juan Martin del Petro or No. 7 Tomas Berdych in the next round.

A day after former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki was knocked out of the tournament, Azarenka, the current women's No. 1, fell in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (11), to Cibulkova. The 23-year-old Cibulkova was very aggressive throughout the match, notching 28 winners to 19 for Azarenka. Cibulkova will take on No. 6 Samantha Stosur of Australia in the women's quarterfinals.
