Rafael Nadal became the most prolific tennis player in the history of the French Open when he defeated the world's No. 1 player Novak Djokovic early Monday after an 18-hour rain delay suspended the match between the two.
Nadal, in true clay court specialist form, came from behind to win this one, having trailed 2-1 in the fourth set when play resumed Monday. Even though Djokovic has owned Nadal in recent history (7-3 against him in their last 10 matches), Nadal was at home on the clay courts in the French Open.
This is Nadal's seventh French Open title and 11th Grand Slam, breaking his tie with Bjorn Borg for having the most wins in the tournament's history. Nadal told NBC following the victory that the comparisons Borg were "a great honor."

Rain has reared its ugly head yet again at the 2012 French Open, and this time, it forced the match to be postponed until Monday.
Rafael Nadal currently leads top-seeded Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 1-2 in the 2012 French Open final. Play was suspended during the second set because of rain, but the match resumed, allowing Nadal to take a two set to none lead over the world's No. 1 player.
Djokovic, though, would respond, dominating the third set, winning it 6-2. At one point between the third and fourth sets, Djokovic won eight straight games, before Nadal snapped the streak in the third game of the fourth set.
Play was once again suspended after Nadal snapped Djokovic's streak in the fourth set, and unfortunately for tennis fans, the match will not resume until Monday morning.
Any type of momentum by either player is now halted, as both players will have to wait a day before resuming play in the fourth set.
The match will resume at 7:00 a.m. ET on Monday and can be seen on NBC.

Rain has struck again at Roland Garros, forcing the second rain delay in the 2012 French Open final between top-seeded Novak Djokovic and French Open king Rafael Nadal.
Nadal stormed out to a quick two set to none advantage, winning the first two sets 6-4, 6-3, despite the fact that the second set featured the first rain delay of the match.
Djokovic, though, didn't plan on going quietly into the Paris night. The Djoker stormed back, dominating the third set 6-2, and jumping out to a quick 2-0 advantage in the fourth set. Nadal bounced back, though, and took the third game of the fourth set -- but much to Nadal's chagrin, the match was once again suspended immediately following the third game.
The win in the fourth set for Nadal broke a streak of eight straight games won by Djokovic. Nadal expressed his displeasure about the match being suspended, saying that the court's condition is the same as it was an hour ago when the match was being played.
The match is supposed to resume at some point on Sunday.

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will meet in the final round of the 2012 French Open, as Nadal seeks a record-breaking seventh title and Djokovic looks to become hold all four majors at the same time, a feat unaccomplished since Rod Laver in 1969. Nadal beat David Ferrer 6-2, 6-2, and 6-1 in a dominant performance. Djokovic had a similarly decisive win over Roger Federer, winning 6-4, 78-5, and 6-3.
Nadal seemed unstoppable, even playing a stroke while seated on the ground after scrambling for a ball. Despite that, he isn't letting the performance give him a sense of security heading into the final. Via French Open:
"I did almost everything right," said Nadal. "But I don’t believe in perfection. It does not exist. You can always play better. I am not thinking I am in the final without losing a set; I am just thinking I am in the final. Experience has taught me you can lose when you are playing fantastic; you can win when you are not playing that well. Last year I had the impression I didn’t really play that well, whereas this year I am playing really well."
Djokovic made it to the final by capitalizing on an uneven performance by Roger Federer, who had 46 unforced errors in the matchup. Djokovic has looked more consistent as the tournament has progressed, and looks to continue that momentum in pursuit of his historic fourth major win.
The 2012 French Open Men's Singles final takes place on Sunday. The complete tournament scoreboard can be found here.

Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova both won Monday at the 2012 French Open to advance to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. The No. 2 seeds have been the most impressive players on their respective draws throughout the tournament. Nadal continued that trend by defeating No. 13 Juan Monaco 6-2, 6-0, 6-0. Sharapova, meanwhile, looked mortal for the first time, dropping a tiebreaker for her first set loss of the tournament. She was was eventually able to dispatch Klara Zakopalova, 6-4, 6-7 (12), 6-2.
No. 4 Andy Murray survived yet another slow start for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, win over No. 17 Richard Gasquet of France. No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 6 David Ferrer also won Monday to round out a men's quarterfinals field that includes the Open's top six seeds among the eight participants.
No. 4 Petra Kvitova beat American Varvara Lepchenko handily, 6-2, 6-1, to advance. No. 7 Na Li was less lucky, becoming the latest highly-seeded woman to fall prematurely in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, loss to Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan. No. 6 Samantha Stosur of Australia is the only other Top 8-seeded woman outside of Sharapova and Kvitova playing in the quarterfinals.

The top seeds on the men's draw at the 2012 French Open continue to push their way through the tournament, though No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Roger Federer struggled at times during five and four set victories, respectively, on Sunday. Meanwhile, an upset-filled women's draw claimed its biggest victim yet at Roland Garros, as No. 1 Victoria Azarenka fell in two sets to No. 15 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.
Djokovic eventually downed No. 22 Andreas Seppi of Italy, 4-6, 6-7 (12), 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. The Serbian champion was broken three times in the first two sets. He fired back in the third set, breaking Seppi four times in five chances. He won three straight sets from the brink of elimination to move on to the quarterfinals, where he will face the winner between No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka and No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Federer won in four sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, over David Goffin of Belgium. Like Djokovic, Federer got off to a slow start before winning three consecutive sets to persevere. He had 17 unforced errors in the first set to just six for his opponent. Ultimately, Federer proved too overpowering, especially on the serve where he reeled off 12 aces to four for his opponent. Federer will face either No. 9 Juan Martin del Petro or No. 7 Tomas Berdych in the next round.
A day after former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki was knocked out of the tournament, Azarenka, the current women's No. 1, fell in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (11), to Cibulkova. The 23-year-old Cibulkova was very aggressive throughout the match, notching 28 winners to 19 for Azarenka. Cibulkova will take on No. 6 Samantha Stosur of Australia in the women's quarterfinals.

Second round of action at the 2012 French Open continued Thursday. No. 10 John Isner provided the highlight of the day with another marathon match against a Frenchman. Unlike his famous 2010 match at Wimbledon against Nicolas Mahut, Isner ultimately lost, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 18-16, to Paul-Henri Mathieu. The match was the second longest in French Open history, lasting five hours and 41 minutes.
Also on the men's draw, No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France needed four sets to take out Germany's Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Tsonga broke his opponent nine times in 15 chances during the match.
On the women's draw, two Americans advanced. Varvara Lepchenko won a hard-earned upset victory over No. 19 Jelena Jankovic, 7-6 (11), 4-6, 6-4. Christina McHale, meanwhile, had no trouble with fellow American Lauren Davis, winning 6-1, 6-3.
Due to the drawn out battle between Isner and Mathieu, the evening match between No. 2 Maria Sharapova and Ayumi Morita was postponed until Friday.
