New York Giants 2012 Rookie Mini-Camp: Tom Coughlin 'Very Impressed' By Rueben Randle

The New York Giants held their first practice of their 2012 rookie mini-camp Friday morning. Afterwards, coach Tom Coughlin was not drawing any conclusions, other than to say "it's just nice to be outside and nice to have them here."

A year ago, of course, there were no mini-camps or off-season training activities due to the NFL Lockout. This season the NFL is back to business as usual.

"It's a little bit of a Chinese fire drill for everybody," Coughlin said. "The defense is lined up half the time the wrong way and that type of thing. So those are some of the things that have to be kind of ironed out. But when you figure you have your draft choices, your undrafted college free agents that have been signed and then the tryout people, they did all right. We made it out to the practice field today. Nobody fell down. We got into the stretch position and it was okay."

Coughlin did make note of the fact that all seven of the Giants' 2012 draft choices were signed as of Friday morning, saying "that's one of the true advantages" of the new CBA.

Here are some notes from the morning practice.

  • Coughlin said he was "very impressed" by wide receiver Rueben Randle, the team's second-round draft choice from LSU.
  • Tight end Adrien Robinson, the team's fourth-round pick from Cincinnati, drew praise from Coughlin after impressively snatching an off-target throw on a short pass. "It was a short range throw but it was on him quickly and he was able to react to it. And that was a plus," Coughlin said.
  • Rutgers grad Joe Martinek made himself noticed, catching a pass and looking quick on a running play.
  • Another Rutgers grad, cornerback Brandon Bing, broke up the first pass of the day, a short out from quarterback Ryan Perrilloux.
