Gemologist is currently the 7-1 third choice in the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby, which will be held Saturday at Churchill Downs. Gemologist prepped for the Derby by winning the Wood Memorial over 11/8 miles at New York’s Aqueduct Race Track on April 7.

As a two-year-old Gemologist won the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs last November. He also earned a victory over six furlongs in his debut at Turfway Park.

Gemologist is trained by Todd Pletcher, who won the 2010 Derby as trainer of Super Saver. The horse is owned by WinStar Farm. He will be ridden on Saturday by jockey Javier Castellano.

Race co-favorites at this juncture are Bodemeister and Union Rags, each at 9-2.
