2012 Kentucky Derby Contenders: Alpha Should Be Familiar To New York Horse Racing Fans

Alpha, one of the 21 horses scheduled to go post-ward this Saturday in the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby, should be familiar to New York horse racing fans. Alpha, currentlly listed with 11-1 odds of winning the first leg of horse racing' Triple Crown, has four career starts, three in New York.

Alpha placed second in the Champage at Belmont Park last October, was victorious in the Withers at Aqueduct in February and placed second in the Wood Memorial just three weeks ago. Alpha's only other career start came in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last November, a disappointing 11th-place effort.

Alpha is owned by Godolphin, a global racing operation founded by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, prime minister and ruler of Dubai and trained by Kiaran McLaughlin. Jockey Alan Garcia will be aboard for the Derby ride.
