NFL Draft 2012: San Diego Chargers Select Melvin Ingram No. 19

Stay connected for news and updates

With the 19th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers have selected South Carolina defensive end Melvin Ingram.

Ingram was a force for the South Carolina defense last year, recording 10 sacks and 15 tackles for loss. He also managed to grab a pair of interceptions and even scored two defensive touchdowns. There will be a bit of a transition for Ingram as he could be converted to a linebacker if drafted by a team running a 3-4 defensive set, but he has a lot of raw ability and a great skill set that will make a mediocre defense a great one almost instantly.

The Chargers pick next in the second round, at No. 49 overall.

Impact on the Giants and Jets:

Ingram was one of the most desired prospects among Jets fans, though Gang Green ultimately went with Quinton Coples at No. 16.
