Mike Pelfrey Injury Update: Tommy John Surgery Likely Tuesday Or Wednesday

Mike Pelfrey met with Dr. James Andrews on Monday, and the respected surgeon is expected to perform Tommy John surgery on New York Mets pitcher at some point in the next 72 hours.

According to CBS Sports reporter Jon Heyman, Pelfrey will undergo Tommy John surgery either Tuesday or Wednesday. The surgery will result in the cruel, premature end to Pelfrey's season, just as he was beginning to pitch some of his best baseball.

Pelfrey had a 2.29 ERA through 19.1 innings this season before suffering a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament during his third start. The 28-year old right hander was 7-13 with a 4.74 ERA during the 2011 season, his fourth straight year registering at least 31 starts. Sadly, Pelfrey's innings-eating streak will almost certainly end this season.

Mike Pelfrey Injury Update: Mets Right-Hander Likely Needs Tommy John Surgery

Behind strong starting pitching the New York Mets have raced out to a 11-8 record, but things are going to get a bit tougher for the Mets' staff as its looking more likely that Mike Pelfrey will need Tommy John surgery to fix a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. Pelfrey met with the media after the Mets 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins and said there's a 99-percent chance he will need the surgery, which could force him to miss the remainder of the season.

The official Twitter account of the Mets said, Pelfrey was going to visit Dr. James Andrews and that prospect Chris Schwinden is going to start in his place on Friday at the Colorado Rockies. Pelfrey has compiled a 2.29 ERA in 19 1/2-innings, while New York is 2-1 in his three starts.

The news leaked after the Mets come-from-behind over the Marlins, who were swept in a three-game series at Citi Field. Starting pitcher Jon Niese pitched seven innings and allowed just two runs.

Mike Pelfrey Injury Update: Mets Await Second Opinion On Elbow

The bad news might be getting worse for Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey.

NJ.com is reporting that an MRI revealed a partially-torn ulnar collateral ligament, per a source, and that the results were sent to notable surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Alabama. The Mets have only said Pelfrey is dealing with joint swelling and Pelrey told reporters Tuesday that his arm felt great. He was placed on the 15-day DL for the first time in his career on Tuesday.

If Pelfrey does have a badly-torn UCL, it could require Tommy John surgery, but the hope is that the swelling will go down and he can avoid surgery. Tommy John surgery would sideline Pelfrey for more than a year.

Pelrey has been a bright spot early in the season for the Mets. He has given up five earned runs on 24 hits over 19 2/3 innings. The Mets were 2-1 in his starts, although he didn't record a decision.

Mike Pelfrey Injury Update: Mets' Starter To Miss Next Start, Possibly More

As the New York Mets prepare for a three-game set with the Miami Marlins, the team received some bad news about starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey Tuesday as the right-hander will miss his next start due to elbow swelling. Pelfrey could miss more time if it's a ligament tear, which manager Sandy Alderson said it could be.

The Mets will replace him with Robert Carson, but only for a few days before Chris Schwinden is set to start for Pelfrey.

So far this season, Pelfrey has been one of the many early-season bright spots in the Mets' rotation as he's compiled a 2.29 ERA in 19 1/2-innings. New York went 2-1 in his three starts and allowed no home runs while he was on the mound.

Unfortunately, this is the second player Tuesday to go on the DL for the Mets. They placed outfielder Jason Bay on the DL earlier in the day.
