Twins 7, Yankees 3: Minnesota Pounces On Freddy Garcia

The Yankees got to Carl Pavano early, but the Twins' starter was strong enough to out-duel Freddy Garcia

One night after the New York Yankees' bats exploded for 11 runs, they fell silent against one of their former starters.

Carl Pavano, the much maligned former Yankee, pitched seven innings of seven-hit, three-run ball to lead the Minnesota Twins (3-7) to a 7-3 win over the Yankees (5-5) Monday night at Yankee Stadium. New York did receive another stellar outing from Derek Jeter, who finished 2-for-4 with his third homer of the season, but Pavano's endurance greatly suprassed Freddy Garcia's. The Yankees' right-hander pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. Boone Logan pitched 2/3 of a scoreless inning, but Corey Wade came in before the top of the eighth inning and allowed two runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.

All of the Yankees' offense came in the first inning, as Granderson followed Jeter's homer with one of his own to go back-to-back in New York's first two at-bats. Alex Rodriguez then reached base on an infield single, and Pavano seemed destined for a short-lived outing against his former team. Robinson Cano struck out swinging on the next at-bat, but Mark Teixeira followed with a single that scored Rodriguez. Nick Swisher and Raul Ibanez each flied out to end the inning.

After that torrid first inning, however, Pavano allowed just three more hits in his final six innings on the mound. Brian Duensing and Matt Capps each pitched an inning in relief, allowing one hit each.

The Twins finished with 14 hits on the night, including three by Joe Mauer and two each from Jamey Carroll, Justin Morneau and Ryan Doumit. Morneau added a homer in the sixth inning, his second of the season. All but two of Minnesota's hitters -- Denard Span and Alexi Casilla -- tallied an RBI.
