Middling as they seemed in the regular season, the Pittsburgh Panthers are moving on to the second round of the Big East Tournament for the first time in four years. The No. 13 Panthers (17-15, 5-13 Big East) will face the No. 5 Georgetown Hoyas (22-7, 12-6 Big East) Wednesday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN and ESPN 3D.
Pittsburgh met No. 12 St. John's Tuesday afternoon but was able to pull off the upset thanks to 20 points from senior guard Ashton Gibbs. Senior forward Nasir Robinson added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Georgetown, meanwhile, earned a first-round bye after despite losing its regular-season finale to Marquette (the conference's No. 2 seed) 83-69 Saturday. The Hoyas are led by a trio of senior guard Jason Clark (14.3 points per game), junior forward Hollis Thompson (13.0 ppg) and senior center Henry Sims (11.1 ppg). Freshman forward Otto Porter leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game and is fourth with 9.0 ppg.
Wednesday afternoon's winner will face the No. 4 Cincinnati Bearcats Thursday at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN and ESPN3D.
