Christina Aguilera Super Bowl Mistake: Can Kelly Clarkson Do Better Than 2011's Mess Up?

There will not be a pre-Super Bowl conversation, especially when Kelly Clarkson steps up to the microphone to sing The Star-Spangled Banner, without somebody mentioning Christina Aguilera's mistake for last year's Super Bowl. If you need a quick reminder about the mess up, well here's the video:

Now, if you remember not many viewers of the Super Bowl caught the flub at first -- sadly, most people don't pay attention to the national anthem -- however, besides the commercials, people were YouTubing Ms. Aguilera the next morning to witness her mistake.

In April, Aguilera talked about the mistake on the day-time TV show Ellen:

In short, Aguilera blames her mess up on the Super Bowl and the awwwwing moment it creates.

Well, I have news for Christina, if New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning or New England Patriots' Tom Brady used that excuse, they wouldn't be back for the following season.

Lets just up that Ms. Clarkson has better success.

Super Bowl National Anthem: Whitney Houston Performs Before Giants, Bills In 1991

As mention before in this Super Bowl national anthem StoryStream, the performance that most Americans remember is that of Whitney Houston, who performed before the 1991 Super Bowl between the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, FL -- the Giants edge the Bills, 20-19, thanks to Scott Norwood's wide-right field goal near the end of the game.

The performance of Francis Scott Key's most famous song, The Star-Spangled Banner, came shortly after President George H. Bush announced that American troops would be sent to the Persian Gulf to fight, so things were a bit patriotic. The rendition of Houston's is simple, yet, strong and went on to be the only Super Bowl national anthem to be recorded and then crack the Top 20 billboard list.

Here's the YouTube video of the performance if you'd like to share it to other Super Bowl party-goers:

Super Bowl

Kelly Clarkson will be the national anthem singer for Super Bowl 2012, which will feature the New England Patriots against the New York Giants in a rematch of a few years ago. At approximately, 6:30 p.m. ET on NBC, Ms. Clarkson will stand near a microphone and sing Francis Scott Key's most sacred tune, The Star-Spangled Banner, and try her best to: A) not screw it up; and B) place herself among the greatest ever to sing it.

However, since Whitney Houston's amazing rendition during the '91 Super Bowl before the Giants and Buffalo Bills played at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, FL, every other national anthem singer has seemed to have failed to live up to the song's expectations.

The truth is, not a lot can go right (especially if you're name is Christina Aguilera) if one decides to sing the national anthem for the Super Bowl, as you're always going to be compared to Houston's performance, which was the first and only Super Bowl national anthem performance to be turned into a Top 20 single.

Plus, I've never gone to a Super Bowl party and heard positive reviews about the national anthem singer.

Of course, I never gone to a Super Bowl party and actually heard the whole version of the Star Spangled Banner because the volume on the television is usually still down or people are talking while trying to get settled in.

So, just last night, I embarked on a journey -- well, I sat in my office chair and went on YouTube -- to check out all the past Super Bowl national anthem performances since Houston's and came up with this top 5 list.

(Note: my worst performance does not need to be mentioned as Ms. Aguilera easily won that award after her mistake last year.)

(Note No. 2: If you'd like to know, Mariah Carey was the singer after 9/11 -- yeah -- the Back Street Boys sang it in '01 -- what? -- and Kathie Lee Gifford performed it in '95 -- no comment.)

(Note No. 3: For a really good national anthem do not have a cheesy singer perform -- sorry, Cher and Jewel.)

5) Garth Brooks -- '93 Dallas Cowboys vs. Buffalo Bills at The Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA

The best thing about this performance is Brooks' shirt, which is sooooo '93 -- remember zubaz pants? Also, it helps that I am a huge Garth Brooks fan and my favorite NFL team, the Bills, were playing in the game (don't you dare mention the score!).

4) Faith Hill -- '00 Tennessee Titans vs. St. Louis Rams at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA

Faith Hill National Anthem (FULL) - Super Bowl XXXIV (via jammer7321)

The best thing about this anthem is Hill, who does a nice old-fashioned rendition of a song that should be 90-seconds long. Her version happened before a very exciting Super Bowl and, well, is freakin' Faith Hill!

3) Carrie Underwood -- '10 Indianapolis Colts vs. New Orleans Saints in Miami, FL

If you're starting to see a pigish theme to all of this, well, you're catching on. I love how Ms. Underwood does a decent version of the national anthem, while wearing a white jump-cat suit.

2) Academy Choirs -- '05 Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, FL

US National Anthem by the Academy Choirs (via Lunatic77)

1) Jennifer Hudson -- '09 Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals, Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL

I must admit, I forgot about this performance that was given by the combined choirs of the NAVY, Air Force, ARMY and Coast Guard. Hard not to get emotional after watching this one.

As close as Whitney Houston as you're going to get. Well done Ms. Hudson.

Super Bowl Prop Bets: National Anthem Singer Kelly Clarkson, Madonna Halftime Show, Peyton Manning, Jim Irsay, Andrew Luck

As you've probably seen, SB Nation New York is covering every angle of the 2012 Super Bowl. And with just a few days before the big game, we've decided to reach out to those degenerate gamblers that love to bet on every aspect of the Super Bowl, the biggest sports betting event of the year.

Below is a list of prop bets, provided by Bovada, for national anthem, which will be sang by Kelly Clarkson, the halftime show, which will be performed by Madonna, and the television broadcast (6:30 p.m. on NBC).

New York Giants Prop Bets --- New England Patriots Prop Bets

Jim Irsay, Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck Prop Bets

Prop bet No. 1: How many times will Peyton Manning (Colts quarterback) be mentioned on TV?

Over 3-1/2 (-130)
Under 3-1/2 (-110)

Jared's pick: Considering he's surrounded all the talk this week -- besides Rob Gronowski's ankle -- and his littler brother, Eli Manning, is playing in it. I'd take the over and by a lot.

Prop bet No. 2: How many times will Jim Irsay (Colts owner) be mentioned on TV?

Over 1 (Even)
Under 1 (-140)

Jared's pick: Again, Peyton Manning shot deserves a Jim Irsay shot, so that's one right there. Once they talk about the new stadium, which he helped build then there's No. 2. I'd take the over.

Prop bet No. 3: How many times will Andrew Luck be mentioned on TV?

Over 1 (-110)
Under 1 (-130)

Jared's pick: This is going to be a push, as there's going to be so many other things to talk about during the Super Bowl. I'd stay away from this, but its coming up at least once, so if you're going to bet go with the over.

For the next set of prop bets I brought in an expert -- my wife. She knows a lot more about these types of things than I do, but she hates gambling so take that for what its worth.

National Anthem Super Bowl 2012

Prop bet No. 1: Length of Kelly Clarkson's National Anthem.

Over 1 minutes 34 seconds (-120)
Under 1 minute 34 seconds (-120)

Wife's pick: The National Anthem is a 90-second song that always seem to go longer than that during big events like this. Clarkson is a classy woman, but she will go over.

Prop bet No. 2: Kelly Clarkson's wardrobe.

Super Bowl 46 or official NFL shirt (+225)
Colts Jersey or shirt (+700)
Giants Jersey or shirt (+1500)
Patriots Jersey or shirt (+1500)
Anything else (-300)

Wife's pick: Mrs. Clarkson is from Texas, and she's really Texas, so I don't see her wearing any of those teams. I am going with anything else, as she'll probably wear a Cowboys or Texans jersey.

Prop bet No. 3: Will Kelly Clarkson forget or omit at least one word?

Yes (+250)

Wife's pick: Consider that most of the national anthems nowadays or prerecorded as the singer just mouths the words she won't miss a single one. Don't bet, yes.

Prop bet No. 4: Will Kelly Clarkson's bare belly be showing when she sings?

Yes (+300)

Wife's pick: Again, she's Texas and a classy woman. Plus, she's past her bare-belly days -- that's no a slam on her amazing good looks!! I wouldn't bet yes.

Super Bowl Halftime Show 2012

Prop bet No. 1: Will Madonna wear fishnet stockings at any point during Super Bowl 2012 halftime show?

Yes (-120)
No (-120)

Wife's pick: Madonna always wears fishnet stocks, so I'd go with Yes.

Prop bet No. 2: Will Madonna wear an NFL Jersey or shirt at any point during Super Bowl 2012 halftime show?

Yes (+250)
No (-400)

Wife's pick: At some point, Madonna is going to pay tribute to the NFL so I'd go with Yes, again.

Prop bet No. 3: Will Madonna wear a hat at any point during the Super Bowl 2012 halftime show?

Yes (-120)
No (-120)

Wife's pick: Madonna will be inside, so why would she need a hat? I'd say no.
