The Fairfield Stags made just five field goals in the second half of the 2012 MAAC Tournament Championship Game, giving up their four-point halftime lead and an automatic NCAA Tournament bid. The Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds shot just 33.3 percent for the game, but held the Stags to 28.8 percent shooting to win 48-44 on Monday night.
Those looking for offensive fireworks were sorely disappointed in the second half. The Stags scored just 14 points after halftime after putting up 30 in the first half. Loyola was only moderately sharper, scoring 22 out of the locker room. Maurice Barrow continued to be a force on the boards, hauling in 13 rebounds to go along with his 10 points. He went just 5-for-16 shooting from the field, however. Rakim Sanders and Ryan Olander had 12 and 11 points, respectively, but combined to go 1-for-10 from 3-point range.
Erik Etherly was the only Greyhound to reach double-digit points for the game, scoring 10 along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Fairfield received much better production out of its bench, however, with Justin Drummond scoring eight points in 20 minutes off the bench.

The No. 4 seed Fairfield Stags took a 30-26 lead over the No. 2 Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds at halftime of the 2012 MAAC Tournament Championship Game on Monday.
Rakim Sanders leads all scorers with 10 points through 20 minutes. He has done most of his damage at the free throw line, where he has made 6-of-7 attempts. Both teams have done a nice job at the charity stripe, with the Stags going 11-of-14 and the Greyhounds making 9-of-10.
Loyola's starters have not shot well, with Erik Etherly, Robert Olson and Dylon Cormier combining to go 3-for-11 from the field. The Greyhounds have gotten nice production off the bench from Anthony Winbush and Justin Drummond with six points each. Fairfield's Maurice Barrow has been the leader on the boards, with six rebounds to go along with his six points.

Another ticket to the NCAA Tournament will be punched today as the MAAC championship game gets underway with Fairfield and Loyola tonight.
Fairfield (19-13, 12-6) is coming off of a stunning victory over top-seeded Iona on Sunday, 85-75. The Stags got a virtuoso performance from Rakim Sanders who scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Fairfield won because of its dominance on the glass, out-rebounding the Gael, 32-17.
On the other side, Loyola (23-8, 13-5) comes in after beating Siena, 70-60, yesterday. The Greyhounds were paced by Erik Etherly who poured in 21 points to accompany six rebounds.
In the two previous meetings between Loyola and Fairfield, each team found a way to win once. On Feb. 12, the Stags pounded the Greyhounds 78-61 but lost to them back on Jan. 13, 66-63.
It's all on the line tonight for two teams who face either the end of their season or the elation of joining the March Madness that will ensue next Thursday.

The No. 2 seed Loyola (MD) Greyhounds defeated the Siena Saints, 70-60, in the 2012 MAAC Tournament semifinal at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. on Sunday.
Loyola's Erik Etherly led all scorers with 21 points. Shane Walker and Robert Olson chipped in 12 points apiece for the Greyhounds. Siena was led by 17 points by Kyle Downey. The Saints also got 16 points from Owen Wignot and 13 points from O.D. Anosike.
Loyola trailed early in the game. The Greyhounds took a lead with six minutes to play in the first half and never lost it the rest of the way. Loyola hit 7-13 three-point attempts while holding the Saints to just 2-9 from behind the arc.
The Greyhounds will meet the No. 4 seed Fairfield Stags in the MAAC Tournament final on Monday at 7 p.m. (TV: ESPN2/ESPN3). Fairfield got to the final with a stunning 85-75 upset over the top-seeded Iona Gaels earlier on Sunday. The winner of the Loyola (MD)-Fairfield matchup will win the conference's automatic bid into the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Following the No. 1 seed Iona Gaels' shocking semifinal upset in the 2012 MAAC Tournament to the Fairfield Stags on Sunday, the Iona coach made his case for being included in the NCAA Tournament by taking a shot at the Big East.
Iona Coach Tim Cluess: "If you’re going to pick 8 or 9 teams out of the Big East, that’s nonsense. Those teams aren’t as good as we are."
— Pete Thamel(@PeteThamelNYT) March 4, 2012
Part of what made the loss so stunning is that Fairfield was without second-team All-MAAC guard Derek Needham who has scored 1364 career points. Needham is out for the season after breaking a bone in his foot in a regular season game against Iona on Feb. 24. Needham was second on the Stags in scoring and first in assists at the time.
As for the Big East, the conference has seemingly had a down season after sending a record 11 squads to the NCAA Tournament last season. The 8th and 9th placed teams in the Big East during the regular season were West Virginia (19-12, 9-9) and Seton Hall (19-11, 8-10). Iona is 25-7 but has zero wins over ranked teams.

The Iona Gaels were upset in the semifinal round of the 2012 MAAC men's basketball tournament, 85-75, by the Fairfield Stags on Sunday at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.
Neither team could pull away in the first half which ended with the Gaels ahead, 42-40. Iona held a two-possession lead for most of the first ten minutes of the second half. Fairfield used a 16-1 run over the next five minutes to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Fairfield was led by a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds from Rakim Sanders. Scott Machado scored 24 points for Iona. Both teams shot above 50% from the field as well as right at 50% from behind the arc for the game. The difference over the course of the second half looked to be the Stags' domination on the glass.
Fairfield moves on to the finals of the MAAC Tournament for the second time in three seasons. The Stags will play the winner of Siena vs. Loyola (Md.). The loss almost certainly knocked Iona out of the NCAA tournament. The Gaels were the regular season MAAC champs, but will now likely be NIT bound.

The semifinals of the 2012 MAAC conference tournament are set, with top-seeded Iona looking very much the part of a favorite.
Iona drubbed Marist 87-63 on Saturday afternoon, setting up a semifinal matchup against Fairfield, who eked out a win against Rider 65-63. Senior forward Mike Glove poured in 29 points for Iona, and the Gaels sprinted past Marist in the second half.
On the other side of the bracket, Loyola (MD) used a strong second half of its own to move past Niagra to the semifinals, and it was charged by Dylon Cormier and Erik Etherly, who combined for 44 points.
In the final game of the night Siena tipped Manhattan, 84-82.
The semifinals will be played Sunday afternoon, starting with Iona and Fairfield at 2 p.m. EST and followed by Loyola (MD) and Siena. Both games will be played in Springfield, MA -- the host site for the tournament -- and can be seen on ESPN3.
