Will Pinstripe Bowl sell out?

The directors of the Pinstripe Bowl thought they hit a home run when both the Syracuse Orange and West Virginia Mountaineers accepted invitations to play their postseason games at Yankee Stadium. And according to Jenn Menendez of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, early ticket sales are proving their projections correct.

Matt Wells, West Virginia's assistant athletic director for marketing and sales, said as of Monday the school only had a few hundred of its allotted 5,000 tickets left.

Syracuse, which was given a little more than 10,000 tickets, has nearly sold its allotment, bowl spokesman Jason Latimer confirmed.

According to an e-mail sent by the Syracuse athletic department on Monday, there were less than 100 tickets left in the bleachers ($50 a ticket), while the $95-120 level tickets are already sold out. There were still tickets available at the $65 level.

Entering its third year of existence, the Pinstripe Bowl could break an attendance record.

In 2010, a recorded 38,274 were in attendance for Syracuse's 36-34 victory over the Kansas St. Wildcats. Last season, 38,328 watched the Rutgers Scarlet Knights defeat the Iowa St. Cyclones, 27-13.

On Nov. 20, 2010, when the Army Black Knights played the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Yankee Stadium in a regular-season contest, the attendance was 54,251.

The Pinstripe Bowl will be played Saturday, Dec. 29, at 3:15 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN.

Despite arrest Syracuse LB still eligible to play

Syracuse Orange starting linebacker Marquis Spruill is still eligible to play in the Pinstripe Bowl, head coach Doug Marrone told The Daily Orange's Chris Iseman Wednesday at the bowl's official press conference in New York.

Early Sunday morning, the junior linebacker was charged with disorderly conduct and second-degree assault after grabbing a police officer in a public altercation that involved teammate Steve Rene.

Spruill reportedly was arrested for the assault and placed inside a police vehicle where he then kicked open the door almost striking an officer.

"Obviously we’re disappointed in the behavior of both of our players," Marrone said. "I’ll handle it internally. That’s really it."

Though nothing official has been announced, Marrone's comments are surprising as most believed Spruill would not be kicked off the team but would at least be ineligible for Syracuse's bowl game Saturday, Dec. 29, against the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Spruill, who's fourth on the team in tackles (36) and has collected two sacks, is considered one of the leaders of the defensive unit.

'The Boss' trumps a college football tradition

Doug Marrone confirmed Wednesday the Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy will not be on the line Saturday, Dec. 29, when Syracuse faces West Virginia in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. The former long-time Big East rivals will instead play just for the George Steinbrenner Trophy.

Syracuse to face West Virginia in Pinstripe Bowl

The Syracuse Orange will face the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Pinstripe Bowl, the Charleston Daily Mail's Mike Casazza is reporting. The former long-time Big East Conference rivals will meet Saturday, Dec. 29, at Yankee Stadium.

Syracuse (7-5) officially accepted its bowl invitation earlier in the day, while West Virginia's invite and acceptance is expected to come soon.

The Orange, which will representing the Big East for the final time as a football program, is heading into the Pinstripe Bowl on a three-game winning streak. SU ended its season winning five of its last six games, including a dominating 45-26 victory over the then nationally-ranked Louisville Cardlinals and a thrilling 31-27 win at the Missouri Tigers.

The Mountaineers (7-5) will be playing in their first bowl game as a member of the Big 12 Conference. In its inaugural season in the league West Virginia compiled a 4-5 record, which included a two-game winning to close out the regular season.

Before this season, the two programs annually met as members of the Big East and played for the Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy. Currently, Syracuse is in possession of the trophy as it defeated West Virginia, 49-23, last season at the Carrier Dome.

Its expected the winner of the Pinstripe Bowl will earn the right to claim the trophy.
