The Houston Texans wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring in just under four minutes on a eight-play, 85-yard opening drive capped off by a Matt Schaub touchdown pass to a wide-open Owen Daniels. With that score, the Texans grabbed the early lead, 7-0.
The Jets quickly went three-and-out on their first drive of the game but, after punting the ball away, forced Houston into a three-and-out as well.
On second down of the following drive, Tim Tebow entered the game at quarterback. Playing only one down, Tebow dropped back and delivered a perfect deep ball to wide receiver Jason Hill, who dropped the pass. Sanchez re-entered the game on the next play and threw a catchable pass to wide out Edmond Gates, who was not looking. The ball fell harmlessly to the ground and, once again, New York was three-and-out.
The Jets defense then gave Mark Sanchez and the offense the boost they needed, as cornerback Antonio Cromartie intercepted a Schaub pass to set up New York near midfield. One minute and 47 seconds later, Mark Sanchez connected with tight end Jeff Cumberland on a 27-yard seam route to tie the game, 7-7.
The Jets have possession on their own 25-yard line as Monday Night Football heads to the second quarter.
