SU's non-conference season-opening tilt against the San Diego St. Aztecs will be played despite reports of a possible cancellation, the two schools confirmed Friday.

The season-opening men's basketball showdown between the Syracuse Orange and San Diego St. Aztecs will be played despite reports of a possible cancellation, the two schools confirmed in a press release Friday night. The game, which is being called the "Battle on the Midway" because its being played on the deck of the aircraft carrier museum, the U.S.S. Midway, in San Diego, will played Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. ET.

"FOX Sports San Diego is committed to ensuring the game takes place as scheduled," said Henry S. Ford, Sr. Vice President and General Manager in a press release. "We're happy to work with San Diego State and Syracuse to make Battle on the Midway a first-class event here in San Diego and an outstanding telecast to our national audiences."

"We continue to look forward and are truly excited about the upcoming opportunity for our team to play on The Midway in our honor of our U.S. service people," said Syracuse Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. "We believe the event will be special and respectful."

On Thursday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported the game could be terminated due to the lack of national sponsors. However, it seems the two schools worked with Fox Sports San Diego, the media outlet that's broadcasting the contest, to resolve the situation, reports the Syracuse Post-Standard's Mike Waters.

The statement made no mention of a sponsor for the event. However, a source told the Post-Standard that Syracuse University, San Diego State University and Fox Sports had all stepped up as the key stake-holders in the event.

The non-conference tilt will feature two programs that have made the NCAA Tournament three consecutive seasons.
