The New York Jets had a chance to take a one-game lead and sole possession of first place with a victory in New England. Instead, the Jets took the Patriots to overtime before losing 29-26 after Mark Sanchez fumbled on the Jets first overtime possession.
Sanchez and Gang Green scored 13 straight fourth quarter points to took a three-point lead with under two minutes to play, but Tom Brady did what Tom Brady does, marching the Pats into field goal range before Stephen Gostkowski booted a 43-yard field goal as regulation time expired.
In overtime, the Patriots won the toss and moved down field before the Jets made a stop on third down. Gostkowski kicked a 48-yard field goal giving the Pats a three-point lead. On the ensuing possession, Sanchez and the Jets benefited from a downfield holding penalty on third down giving the Jets a new set of downs.
Sanchez dropped back and was hit low and then up high while attempting to throw the ball away. He fumbled it was recovered by New England, sealing the victory.
For the game, Sanchez was 28-for-41 for 328 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Shonn Greene, a week after rushing for 161 yards and three scores, was held to just 54 yards on 16 carries. He scored the first touchdown of the game.
Next week, the Jets (3-4) return home to face Miami, who they defeated in overtime in Week 3, while the Patriots (4-3) face the St. Louis Rams in London.
