Derek Jeter injury: Yankees' captain fractures ankle, out for the season

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Yankees not only lost Game 1 of the ALCS Saturday night, but also their captain for the remainder of the season.

New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter will miss the remainder of the season due to a fractured left ankle he suffered Saturday night in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. The Yankees' captain awkwardly landed on the ankle trying to corral a ground ball hit by Detroit Tigers' shortstop Jhonny Peralta in the top of the 12th inning of a heartbreaking 6-4 loss.

After rolling to the ground and failing to get off a throw, Jeter was laying in a prone position in the infield dirt grimacing in pain. He would later be helped off the field by the team trainer and manager Joe Girardi.

After the game, Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman confirmed Jeter had broken his ankle and would need at least three months of rehabilitation.

"He's out, he's out," Girardi said about the injury in his postgame press conference. "It wont jeopardize his career, but he will not be playing for anymore this year."

New York has already dropped its captain off the roster and replaced him with utility infielder Eduardo Nunez. Backup Jayson Nix is expected to get the start at shortstop in Sunday's Game 2 (4 p.m. ET on TBS).

Jeter was hitting .333 (9-for-27) with two RBI and four runs scored in the postseason.
