Islanders Vs. Hurricanes Final Score: New York Wins 4-3 In Shootout

The Carolina Hurricanes hosted the New York Islanders on Tuesday night in a battle of last-place teams. Both teams had 32 points entering the game, with the Islanders having won their last two games. A late third-period goal by Kyle Okposo helped send the game to overtime and the Islanders were able to come away with the 4-3 shootout win and their third straight victory.

New York grabbed an early lead and opened scoring when Matt Moulson netted his 18th goal of the season at 3:40 in the first period. The lead was short-lived, however, as just 31 seconds later, the Canes tied things with an Anthony Stewart goal.

The only goal in the second period came on from Brandon Sutter at 3:13 to put the Canes up 2-1.

Frans Nielson evened the game up again with an early power play goal in the third period. At 15:46, Chad LaRose of Carolina scored his 10th goal of the season to give the Canes the lead once again at 3-2, but Okposo scored with just 90 seconds left in regulation to keep New York alive.

Neither team scored in overtime and they went to a shootout. The Islanders had the first shot and Pierre Parenteau scored on a 14-foot snap shot. Jussi Jokinen of the Canes made his shot with a backhand, after which Nielson sank his own backhand to put the Islanders up 2-1 in the shootout. Three missed shots later, the Islanders were awarded the win.

The Islanders picked up two points with the victory, but still sit 10 points behind the fourth-place New Jersey Devils, who have 44 points.
