2012 NHL All-Star Game: Three Rangers, One Islander Playing

Goalie Henrik Lundqvist, defenseman Dan Girardi, and forward Marion Gaborik will represent the New York Rangers in the 59th NHL All Star Game, to be played Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. The game will be held in Ottawa, and can be seen on NBC Sports.

The New York Islanders will be represented by center John Tavares, who has 20 goals and 29 assists this season. He will play for Team Alfredsson. There are no members of the New Jersey Devils participating for either team.

Lundqvist was anointed the assistant captain to Daniel Alfredsson, and their squad will counter Team Chara. Alfredsson and Chara hand picked their rosters during Thursday night's Fantasy Player Draft, and the Rangers goalie will be joined by his dependable blue-liner Girardi. Gaborik, meanwhile, will play for Team Chara after being selected in the 16th round. This is the second year that the NHL has implemented a player draft format for the All Star game.

The three Rangers All-Stars have played a major role in New York's turnaround season; Lundqvist is a Vezina Trophy candidate, Girardi the leader of the league's second stingiest defense, and Gaborik the team's leading scorer with 39 points.

The Rangers lead Boston by two points in the Eastern Conference standings, and trail only Detroit for the overall league lead.

2012 NHL All-Star Draft: Rules, TV Schedule And More

For those unfamiliar with the goings-on of NHL All Star Weekend, here's a closer look at Thursday night's Fantasy Player Draft, which will air at 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on NBC Sports in the US.

The draft will be conducted by Bruins captain Zdeno Chara (Team Chara) and Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson (Team Alfredsson), who were elected the captains through a vote by both fans and NHL league office members.

Chara will be assisted by Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul, and Alfredsson will have Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist on his side. Each roster will consist of 3 goalies, 6 defensemen, and 10 forwards.

The first pick will be decided by a coin toss, and Chara and Alfredsson will then alternate picking the 38 All Stars available, with two notable stipulations involved: each team's three goalies must be chosen by the conclusion of round 10, and each team's six defensmen must be selected by the conclusion of round 15.

12 NHL rookies will also participate in the game, but they are unavailable for drafting. The NHL will divide the crop of rookies in half to round out each All Star roster, and at the end of round 15 of the Fantasy Player Draft, the NHL will appoint one rookie to choose which squad he and his five teammates will join.

Team Chara will be coached by Claude Julien of the Bruins, and Team Alfredsson will be led by John Tortorella of the Rangers.

The All Star Game will be played Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET, and can be seen on NBC Sports.

Henrique, Larsson Picked As Youngstars; Devils Have No All-Stars

The New Jersey Devils will have two players going to All-Star weekend in Ottawa, but none will play in the showcase game.

The NHL announced that both Adam Henrique and Adam Larsson were two of 12 rookies chosen to participate in this year's all-star activities.

Henrique ranks second among rookies with 34 points (13g, 21a). His 13 goals are tied for first among first-year players, and he's second in assists. He trails fellow rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins by one point.

Larsson ranks second among all rookies in time on ice, averaging 21:41 per game. In 41 games this season, he's collected 14 points (2g, 12a).

The Devils won't have a representative in this year's All-Star game. They join the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers and Columbus Blue Jackets as teams without a representative for the game. Out of those four teams, New Jersey is the only one among the top eight teams in their conference.

New Jersey is also the only team from the Atlantic Division without a representative for the game.

All-Star weekend starts Thursday, January 6 with the player fantasy draft. The annual skills competition will take place on Saturday, January 28. The game will be on Sunday, January 29.
