Freshman running back Lyle McCombs ran for 141 yards and four TDs last Saturday to help the Connecticut Huskies dust the Fordam Rams, 35-3, and new head coach Paul Pasqualoni earn his first win. The season-opening thumbing was nice for Huskies fans, but the question remains: Who's UConn's starting quarterback? As of Thursday, Pasqualoni still planned to use all three candidates -- walk-on Johnny McEntee, Michael Nebrich and Scott McCummings -- but, did not name who would be starting Saturday night against host Vanderbilt.
Opponent preview: Last Saturday, the Commodores cruised past Elon, 45-14 to help first-year head coach James Franklin earn his first victory. Senior linebacker Chris Marve, who's a Preseason SEC First-Teamer, made 12 tackles, including three for losses. Projected starting quarterback senior Larry Smith threw for two TDs and ran for another in the season-opening win. Look for Smith to key on tight end Brandon Bardon, who's a All-SEC Preseason Second Teamer. Vanderbilt was predicted to finish last out of six teams in the SEC East Division.
TV schedule: Saturday at 7 p.m. on SNY.
Point spread: UConn enters as a one-point underdog.
Final thoughts: It be nice to say that the Huskies can go on the road and defeat an SEC team, while playing three quarterbacks. But, it doesn't look promising.
