New York Jets Sign Safety DaJuan Morgan

The New York Jets have signed free agent safety DaJuan Morgan, a former third-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Last season, Morgan spent two games with the Indianapolis Colts after being cut by the Chiefs at the end of preseason.  He recorded just one tackle before being released despite Indianapolis dealing with multiple injuries in the defensive backfield.

While his 2010 was forgettable, Morgan was serviceable for the Chiefs his first two seasons.  Those two years he played in 28 games, starting his final two in Kansas City at free safety before an injury ended his season.

Morgan's ability to play both safety positions will help the Jets defensive depth and -- more importantly -- give Mike Westhoff a willing and experienced special teamer.

New York Jets Lock Down David Harris

The New York Jets have signed inside linebacker David Harris to a 4 year, 36 million dollar contract with 29.5 million in guaranteed money, the most ever to an inside linebacker on a 4 year deal in NFL history. The move will free up about 6 million more in cap space for the Jets right now, as they are benefited by no longer having him under the franchise tag. It will interesting to see if Mike Tannenbaum looks to make a corresponding move in free agency or via trade in the coming days.

Say what you want about the Jets big spending, but they are built to win both now and for the future. Nick Mangold, David Harris, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Mark Sanchez, and Santonio Holmes are now all locked down long term.

Harris was the Jets second round pick in 2007, after they traded up in the round to select him. He has led the team in tackles the past two seasons.

Jets GM MIke Tannenbaum Talks About Nnamdi Asomugha

It has been a tremendously active few days for the New York Jets, particularly for general manager Mike Tannenbaum. The Jets GM joined the Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio New York recently to discuss Nnamdi Asomugha, Plaxico Burress and other Jets comings and goings.

Here are some excerpts from the interview:

How did the dealings go with Nnamdi Asomugha?:

"I’m not a big deadline guy. If you get a deal done five minutes after then I think sometimes they can be artificial. With that said … what we try to do is protect ourselves. Lines of communication obviously were open with a number of different scenarios and after Nnamdi didn’t work out, obviously we were on to Antonio Cromartie and Plaxico Burress. At the end of the week, we felt really good. We accomplished everything we wanted. We wanted a front-line cornerback which we can’t back in Cro."

On taking the risk of signing Plaxico Burress:

"Given his physical attributes, we think he’s going to help us this year. Will he be 100 percent the same player? Obviously that’s hard to say. Even if he starts off at whatever, 60 or 70 percent of what he was, and as the season goes on, improves, we really feel like his stature and his ability in the red zone is going to help us. We appreciate the fact that it’s going to be a little bit of a work in progress."

Given the weapons he now has, how big of a year is this for Mark Sanchez?:

"Every year in the NFL it’s an important year. He’s been in the league for two years and has four road playoff wins. I think that’s a pretty good way to judge a quarterback. And the thing about Mark is that he loves football. He’s a football junkie and it means a lot to him and he hates to lose. I think we’ve got the right guy there. He has tremendous leadership ability and I think, more and more, you’ll see this is his team."

New York Jets Training Camp: Expect David Harris Contract Soon

Multiple sources around the New York Jets organization have reported a long term deal with inside linebacker David Harris should be completed in the next couple of days. Harris also sounded confident today when speaking with the media, saying he believed the process was near complete. He is currently the team's franchise player but we have heard all along they planned on locking him down for the long term as the last piece of their "core four" along with Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, and Darrelle Revis. Harris forms one of the league's better inside linebacker duos with Bart Scott.

Signing Harris to a long term deal will also provide immediate cap relief to the Jets for this year, who could look to improve their depth at linebacker, offensive line, safety, or wide receiver. There is also still a chance they could look to bring veteran defensive end Shaun Ellis or Trevor Pryce.
